oh!my!god! HOCKEY skate versus carotid artery (graphic!!) BUFFALO, New York - The trail of blood on the ice that snaked all the way from the goal line in the Sabres' zone to the Panthers' bench was the evidence left last night of one of the most gruesome scenes in NHL history. [fellow teammate] Jokinen, who had his back to Zednik while tangled with Buffalo's Clarke MacArthur, caught Zednik as he kicked up his leg while falling. Zednik skated to the bench, covering the gash with his hand.
"Blood was flying out of his throat. I was right there," Jokinen said. "At first I didn't know it was my skate because I fell down. Then I saw the replay. I've never seen anything like it." "Worst thing I've ever seen in hockey," centre Stephen Weiss said. "The worst was going through my mind, that somebody better get him help or else ... I don't even want to say it. Just his face coming off was something you don't want to see." "You just saw blood squirting out," winger David Booth said. "That was really scary." rest of story here the video on the news was wild. there is just a sudden flash of blood. but this picture tells the story just as well. glad he didn't bleed out. by all accounts he's doing well now after surgery.

of course it's all over youtube thanks funk
watched a different broadcast after the fact with harry neale commentating (love him) you get a good sense of 19,000 people in utter shock after witnessing the cut and the unease and pall that stayed over the crowd till it was announced zednik was stable. harry neale comments he's never seen so much blood, so fast. you can tell they were frightened for the guy.

This also happened to someone a few years ago also here in Buffalo. It wss Malarchuk. Very similar accident. Thankfully Buff Gen hospital is only minutes away from HSBC Arena.
Maybe now they will finally make neck guards mandatory at all levels of play. [Edited 2/11/08 21:49pm] "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind"-Dr Seuss

Malarchuk gave a radio interview this morning telling about the depression and OCD that he developed after his accident. He still is having a few prob, ems all these years later. He has talked with Zedruk's family and they say Zedruk will be in ICU for about another day and is doing very well.
Interestingly, neck guards are only mandatory at high school level hockey. They need to be more widely used. Malarchuk doesn't support rules that require guards, accidents are rare, but would like to see more widespread usage.
