JD lol You're not a travel bore. Pics are interesting, as are anecdotes, but boasting long after the event is boring.

I meet my fair share of those here, as you can imagine.

"Oh, that's nice, but I prefer to be more off the beaten path. In blah blah we had 2 miles of beach and there were only 2 of us... blah blah..."

Coming to Thailand to find the perfect, secluded beach is such a cliche. The whole shoestring thing is played out. It's not big or clever to do it and the youngsters still coming out here for that are just comical.

Tell me about it. There was some real cocks when I was travelling. There was some real borish American on our coach to the Thailand/Cambodian border who was talking to this Geordie lass. He was pissed and she wasn't interested in what he was saying. He kept banging on about how hard he was because he'd been to Cambodia before.

There was also some really obnoxious Aussies when I was going to Cusco in Peru. Again, they were pissed and all they seemed to be bothered about was drinking on the cheap. Stay at home and do us all a favour.

Sometimes you do feel like throwing your 'yellow bible' away.

lol You can always overhear people like that on buses, boats etc.

I block everything out with my mp3 player whenever I'm traveling these days.

I remember a young English guy in Penang asking me about how many times I'd been to Thailand. lol Right away I knew this was going to be one of those conversations. I just said 'Quite a few, I guess. I live there'. shrug He was talking about all these places in Thailand, listing them endlessly, and was just incredulous that I'd not visited them all, as if I were this poor excuse for a traveller, that I was soft in some way or too 'mainstream'. I'm just sitting there thinking 'Look, I'm in Penang to get a visa. This is my upteenth time doing what has become a horrible several times a year trip. I have 4 hours before my flight and I just want to wait here with my can of Sprite and my book, pick up my passport from the visa guys, go to the airport, get on that plane, get back to Thailand and get a taxi home to see my wife. I've never been to Sukothai, but my toilet at home has no flush and it's horrible. Will that suffice?'

If I go anywhere in Thailand this year it will be to Phuket. A nice bungalow with hot water, air-conditioning and a fridge. I will go to a nearby restaurant and eat steak or pasta or fish and chips. I will lie on the beach most days, swim in the sea a bit and take some photographs. I will not leave the immediate vicinity of my bungalow for any of the time I am there. smile
