I don't read novels. I have to read stuff that can be picked up, opened anywhere, and put down whenever. I read 5-20 minutes at a time. I don't read the newspaper or any magazines. I read stuff on the computer sometimes, like texts copied into word, but that's painful. I should probably buy a printer.
I still haven't finished 'The Idiot'. I started from the beginning for the 3rd time last year only to get a little over halfway. After a few months I forget what I've read, so no more. I'll just never finish it. Same with 'Picture Of Dorian Gray'. Last book I managed to get all the way through was 'The Kite Runner'. Or 'Gerrard: My Autobiography'. . [Edited 2/11/08 2:11am]

Ex-Moderator | I read every night before falling asleep. I generally can't fall asleep without reading. Sometimes it's 5 minutes, sometimes it's an hour.
Or I could spend an entire Sunday reading. |

If it's a great book, it just gets read. If it's a book I'm having trouble with, but I want to get through, I promise myself to read 1 chapter a day until it's done. That way it's not too overwhelming. Like some folks here, I read around 2 to 3 books at a time. MyeternalgrattitudetoPhil&Val.Herman said "We want sweaty truckers at the truck stop! How do you manage to stay with a huge novel for example and read it quicky, what with life's demands? How do you read a newspaper with all it's suppliments? Have you got any tips on how to stick with it?!
I love to read. I carry a book with me wherever I go. I read during breakfast, on my lunch hour and before bed. I read about 3 to 4 hours on Saturdays and about 5 hours on Sundays. I also read really slowly. Not only do I get into the plot and themes but I find myself paying attention to paragraph and sentence structure and the overall art of writing... The trick: NO TELEVISION. Although it's becoming a problem, as lately I rather curl up with a good book than to be social or just deal with people. I love to read, but I've never had the attention span to patiently take in a single lengthy text before moving on to the next. I've found class assignments requiring that sort of thing to be excruciating, and aside from them I could count on my fingers the number of books I've willfully read cover-to-cover in sequence. I naturally jump forwards and backwards in a piece, juggling it with multiple other things I'm reading, putting it down and (maybe) returning to it in some undetermined future. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

typically i'm a slow reader because i like to go back to certain paragraphs or sentences and meditate on what i just read, to make sure i comprehended all the details, or sometimes maybe i just really like the way something was worded and i want to roll it around in my brain a little bit before i go on.
lately though, i've been burning through books like wildfire. where it usually takes me a week or so to get through a novel, lately i've been zipping through books in two days max. it's kinda crazy.

Moderator | Finding time to read is easy, forgo the TV and the internet for a few nights a week. Finding the motivation to read is harder... you have to find something you want to read, otherwise it will just be a chore.
As for me I read mad fast..seriously...but it comes from years and years of bookwormery. I started a short novel (Girlfriend in a Coma 288 pages ) around 6 this evening and it's now 9:30 and I'm just about rounding the halfway mark. It's not bad,and I've heard a bunch about it just never got around to reading it until now. http://www.amazon.com/Gir...308&sr=8-1 In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular. |

since i work nights, i spend the hour or two before i have to start getting ready either at the gym, or else i'm in my room reading with no music or background noise to distract me. it's very relaxing and it gets me in the right mental state for work.

Reading is very important to me. I've been a reader since I was a youngster. I try to find books that will interest me and teach me something too. I like lots of different genres from fiction, classics, non-fiction. I read about 30 books a year and I usually enjoy every one of them. I take my time and relish every page!
Right now I'm reading a non-fiction book called The Floating Brothel about female convicts sent to Australia in the 1780's. Very interesting and educational at the same time.

News: Online and BBC News on PBS or CNN when a debate or something interesting is on. Books: I read 98% of the time when I'm commuting. I don't drive, so I can actively hold books and magazines and read them on public transport.

It depends. If I'm on vacation the I can rip through books at a really fast pace.
I get through about 2 400-pagers in 7-8 days. Otherwise during daily life with work and home duties I'm usually reading 2-3 books at a time. It takes forever since I generally only read shortly before bed, weekend mornings, my train commute, or on business flights.

We were supposed to tell our teacher in grade 4-6 what we were reading each week and my teacher got to hear everything from "Dracula" to J.P Sartre, finally I said "The Bible" one week and he decided that he'd taken enough crap from a 10 year-old so he said "ok, funny. Enough with the jokes already, it's getting old." I took out the Bible from my bag and just smiled sweetly at him and said "want me to write a book report on it when I'm done? I'm sure it'll be a hit with my class mates."
