Which Teacher...?? Influenced you to great things? Even if it didn't click in right away, who can you look back and say...Mr./Mrs. had it right and I am happy to have been in their class!!
My ninth grade English teacher seen my writing ability and intelligence and called me on it one day as I just sat in class. She kept me after class and basically cursed my ass out for being so incredibly lazy when I had so much potential!! It woke me up because just one year prior the powers that be "tried" to place me in special ed reading class because of my laziness....I quickly got them to test me and got the hell out of that damn class!!! Here's To You....Mrs. Shippos!! [Edited 2/7/08 6:45am] The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read them. -- Mark Twain.

I've had a lot of great teachers.
Mrs Taylor, my journalism teacher was special. She was like a mother at school. She was the one to encourage me in all aspects of life. In college, it was my world history professor, Sally Hanley. She was always would whisper to me, "You are great!" She just embraced the minority students on campus and provided us with encouragement. She took us to see Angela Davis speak at IU and I remember when Syd was born she said , "That is going to be a GREAT kid!" That made me cry. LOVED HER

My junior high teacher who told us that everything you do is ultimately motivated by self-interest.
My university creative writing prof who observed, "I think we 'give ourselves points' for (doing things that are seemingly altruistic)" and also for admitting to ourselves that we do these things for not purely selfless reasons, etc. Several English teachers who made me feel special and nurtured my creativity. University music prof who was my biggest cheerleader. My junior high typing teacher, without whom it probably would've taken way more time to write this.

My fifth grade teacher - who was the first teacher to treat me as a person, rather than as a child.
We had a spelling contest second semester. Every kid got a piece of paper that had on it a flower pot, with a flower stem coming out of it, made out of construction paper. If you got a perfect score on your spelling test, you got a purple petal, if you got one wrong, you got a magenta petal, if you got two wrong, you got a pink petal. More than two wrong...no petals. After about ten weeks, I had all purple petals (perfect scores on every test). Nobody else was even close. Then, on the last test, I got one wrong. My teacher asked me to stay late at lunchtime so that she could tell me privately that I'd gotten one wrong. She handed me my paper and said, "I wanted you to know before I handed the papers back, so you can be prepared. We both know the other students are going to make things pretty rough for you today. But you won the contest hands down. Be proud that you did your best - and don't let them get to you." It was probably one of the kindest things anyone has ever done for me. And I have never forgotten. I never misspelled that word again, either. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Sister Agnes, 2nd grade. If you pick your nose, you get a quick backhand.
If you eat it, you're guaranteed promotion to 3rd grade, as one more year of that disgusting behavior is too much, even a nun.....hahahahahaha

My mathematics and sport teacher when I was about 11,12 years old. I sucked at sport, but was good at math and she always appreciated when I tried and I got better grades than way better students when she saw my efforts and explained that to the class. She also took me and another girl who was great at sports but bad at math as an example to explain how we all have different talents and should embrace them. She was also very supportive towards me as she knew my dad was very ill.
I felt so sorry for her when her son who was a TV presentator got fired because a famous singer showed on his show how women masturbate (that was in the first half of the 80s and a huge scandal ) and later died of AIDS at a time when AIDS was still a total taboo . [Edited 2/7/08 11:42am] With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

In high school my English teacher Mr Lowe. We were going over poetry in class, now usually I was pretty quiet and plated dumb a lot So when going over Robert Frost,E. E. Cummings,Edgar Allan Poe and Emily Dickinson Mr Lowe got mad at me because I not only could explain what that poet was saying but I understood where the poet was coming from . He asked me why I played stupid when I was very intelligent. I just shrugged and said sometimes it was better to thought ignorant, then to open my mouth and remove all doubt.
Now in beauty school my favorite instructor Kim had told me that just because I was older then most of the girls there I had just as much if not more potential because I loved what I was doing. And she was right I am great at what I do and love it more then I ever thought possible.

A kindly, white-haired teacher called Mrs Rawlinson told the class I was "gifted" when I was about seven. However, having subsequently done jack shit to justify this, I hesitate to call her words prescient
