Why does it matter if they were real or not, years after they died? As long as you know about what they stood for and why they are still known. It's like Jesus - obviously, the guy didn't actually rise from the dead, ohgoon it's a teeny weeny bit exaggerated and that, but it is very important we remember his lifestyle tips.(goes into salman rushdie style hiding for ten years lurking)

I like your line of thought (re- jesus), but of course it matters. It matters because we should look to the author rather than the character for guidance. If they are real, it is probably best to learn from their mistakes.
