I can relate to this.
My last name isn't fucked, per se... it's just confusing to everyone who meets me. I'm a Mexican man, with Mexican parents who speak Spanish! I am light brown skinned, straight blackish-brown hair with obvious Latino features. Yet... my last name is Robinson. Somewhere up in our family tree, some British/Scottish dude married into this Mexican family and jacked us all up for life! There's a slew of Mexicans with the name Robinson stretching from Santa Barbara to Grand Rapids to El Paso! Now, like I said, the name Robinson is not a bad name. The problem lies with the fact that most Robinsons are either Caucasion or Black. This happens all the time: I'm sitting in a doctor's office lobby and the receptionist walks into the room and scans the room while holding her chart. She looks at me, looks at the Black gentleman sitting four seats down from me and walks up to him and says, "Mr. Robinson?" He looks at her and shakes his head... I then raise my hand and say... "Over here." I have hypenated my kids' last name to include their mom's maiden name, Sanchez. I hope by doing this they will feel a little more comfortable in their own skin with their names. I wish my Mom had done that for me... or, when I became "of age", I could have changed my name to her maiden name, Ortega. It's weird that this even bothers me in this day and age... but, even after all these years, I somehow still don't feel quite like myself. |

Mine's just really, really common. I've always wanted something a bit more exciting. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου
