I think there's a fair amount of randomness involved, too. In general I'd agree as most of us have a wide range of experiences. And preparedness means you can take advantage of opportunity.
But I wouldn't say that Chris Reeves' kid had bad luck because they didn't prepare. It was just bad luck. My Legacy

In my experience there have been numerous instances where I have had both preparedness and opportunity and no "good luck" or indeed success has occurred.
