So "pool" is a sport?

why not? it's competitive, it's based on a points system, it can even be a team sport, and it's a test of hand-eye coordination, isn't it?

Is playing a pinball machine a sport?

It all depends on what you and it are playing ...

isn't it? i've seen competitions broadcast on sports programs.

I consider it an activity. They broadcast fishing on sports programs and poker also.

What about auto racing(NASCAR, F1)? Are those guys athletes?

You are so wrong, you really have no clue what it physically takes to drive a F1-racecar.....I bet you wouldn't last for even one round!

As much as I love the competitive element, racing in general also gives me kind of a sick feeling when putting it in perspective. Simply put, I know what racing has brought us to some degree but honestly, today, I can't really enjoy it without thinking about the consequences it has (yes environment, yes roadkill, yes at the disgusting amount of money it costs to bring it to us westerners while so many bad stuff is happening where that kind of money is so badly needed).

It's an incredibly wasteful sport, but think of all these other sports flying teams all over the country. That's pretty wasteful, too. (in fact, I was watching an Inconvenient Truth and Al Gore was constantly in a car or on a plane lol)

Beginning of this year Paris-Dakar was cancelled because of safety issues in Mauretania (sp?) ... I remember some drivers making comments on how they wasted a year in preparation and this might force them not to compete next year. However, no word was spent on the fact WHY there were safety issues there mad

I have this on going argument with a friend of mine. He insist that golf is a sport, and I insist that it is NOT a sport but more of an activity. What do u guys think? Sport or no?

Here is my logic:
1. The ball is NEVER moving when u come in contact with it.true AGREE WITH MIDVER AND GRAY
2. U are standing still when u "make" a play. rubbish if you are still you impart no motion the golf swing is hugely complex movement TOTALLY AGREE WITH MDIVER
3. U don't even sweat when u play. If u do sweat it's because the weather is hot, not because of your physical movement. depends MEH
4. No one is playing defense. true DISAGREE WITH GRAY AND MDIVER. THE COURSE ITSELF IS PALYING DEFENSE AND USUALLY WINNING
5. The crowd can't cheer when u are making a play. true THEY CAN'T CHEER YOU IN TENNIS EITHER, UNTIL YOU PUT THE BALL IN PLAY. IT'S A SPORT. SAME HOLDS TRUE FOR GOLF. DISAGREE WITH GRAY AND MIDVER.
6. Anything u are better at the age of 55 than 25 CANNOT possible be a sport. it is bs that the older you get the better you get NO PROFESSIONAL GOLFER WILL BE BETTER AT 55 THAN HE WAS AT 25, SO AGREE WITH MDIVER
7. No refs not true EVERY OTHER PLAYER IN THE FIELD IS A REF. PLUS, THERE ARE PGA RULES OFFICIALS THAT ARE PRESENT ON THE COURSE AT ALL TIMES. AGREE WITH MDIVER
8. The average golfer would get killed trying 2 play real sports like football, basketball, boxing..... i am an average golfer and i play football and rugby ...not dead yet SOME PRO GOLFERS PLAYED D-1 COLLEGE FOOTBALL AND HOCKEY, SO I GIVE THIS A HALF POINT FOR BOTH SIDES
9. There is NO running involved true AGREE WITH MIDVER AND GRAY

I could go on.

4/9....case not proved wink

By my reckoning, Graycap was wrong on 5 1/2 out of 9. So, golf IS a sport! smile

They are athletes but not necessarily competing in a sport. Same is true of fighter pilots.

It's a monumental waste of blood, treasure and time.
