Golf: Sport or activity? I have this on going argument with a friend of mine. He insist that golf is a sport, and I insist that it is NOT a sport but more of an activity. What do u guys think? Sport or no?
Here is my logic: 1. The ball is NEVER moving when u come in contact with it. 2. U are standing still when u "make" a play. 3. U don't even sweat when u play. If u do sweat it's because the weather is hot, not because of your physical movement. 4. No one is playing defense. 5. The crowd can't cheer when u are making a play. 6. Anything u are better at the age of 55 than 25 CANNOT possible be a sport. 7. No refs 8. The average golfer would get killed trying 2 play real sports like football, basketball, boxing..... 9. There is NO running involved I could go on. [Edited 1/29/08 13:12pm]

I sometimes think it's a game for the reasons you mention (like darts or bowling) but I could argue that it's a sport.
Most of the top golfers are not 55 they're younger than 40. The physical skill in accurately driving a ball 200 yards could easily be compared to pitching or hitting in baseball. Look at the young golfers, they're all in great shape now. Watch them hit a ball in slow motion, not the flexibility, strength, accuracy, speed--all athletic traits. My Legacy

There is skill in heart surgery. Does that make it a sport?

knitting is an activity. caving is an activity. ceramics? an activity.
golf is a sport. it involves competition, keeping score, and maneuvering a ball around. all of that = SPORT.

golf is a sport. it involves competition, keeping score, and maneuvering a ball around. all of that = SPORT. So.....is Chess a sport? well, there are international chess tournaments. i think an argument would be that chess is primarily a test of intellect (and it's a board game - no balls to chase around!) and golf has more of a physical element to it (and NO, i'm not dismissing the fact that you need a decent intellect to play golf - but you don't need a mean swing to play chess).

Some of your criteria could be applied to tennis as well, such as "being killed if they tried to play football," and "the crowd must be quiet." My Legacy

U have 2 look at the collective. I just really don't see how it is a sport. It's no different than the game of pool.

Here is my logic: 1. The ball is NEVER moving when u come in contact with it.true 2. U are standing still when u "make" a play. rubbish if you are still you impart no motion the golf swing is hugely complex movement 3. U don't even sweat when u play. If u do sweat it's because the weather is hot, not because of your physical movement. depends 4. No one is playing defense. true 5. The crowd can't cheer when u are making a play. true 6. Anything u are better at the age of 55 than 25 CANNOT possible be a sport. it is bs that the older you get the better you get 7. No refs not true 8. The average golfer would get killed trying 2 play real sports like football, basketball, boxing..... i am an average golfer and i play football and rugby ...not dead yet 9. Definition of Sport
"Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality are major factors." Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

So "pool" is a sport? why not? it's competitive, it's based on a points system, it can even be a team sport, and it's a test of hand-eye coordination, isn't it?
