on one side the surname they have isn't even their name... it's the name of the feudal landlord's farm for whom they worked in norway! when they came to the states there were too many norwegians with the same surname so they changed theirs.
they married descendants of english farmers. so another occupational surname. george. and my mother's cousin was named george george. after his grandfather!! on the german side we liked to marry our cousins quite a bit. now that is something to be about. (including my grandparents lmao!) one side's name means "bad water" and the other side is probably a derivative of house or dwelling. so being a shoemaker shouldn't look so bad .
