Religion is an ill attempt at social order. Nothing more, nothing less.

When it is organized in a certain fashion for the purpose of control or personal gain by an individual or individuals, it is then that I agree with you.

When it is used as a tool for personal and interpersonal refinement and as a humble means to try to explain the experience of the moral law and the finite being's relationship with a creator, it is there that our definition of "religion" differs.

Used as a tool to venture off into our own little world of personal unproven "truths"...

Seems to me that following a recent judgement against them to the tune of $10.9 million, they'd be easy enough to deal with: The locale should allow them to convene, as is their right. But they should be charged up the wazoo for the necessary security and crowd control.

It is utterly preposterous to presume that science could ever come close to proving the existance of a God. There is ample evidence, however and certainly no proof that there is not one. True belief is the most personal of decisions one could make in this life, so how it could be used as a "tool" for anything makes no sense to me.

The problem isn't God, the problem is the Bible.
Most people act like God picked up a pen and WROTE IT.
It was written by men.
Men who CLAIMED to have been inspired by God.
It is not "the word of God", and shouldn't be treated as such.

Agreed, except for the parts of the Bible which actually took place - some things in it are true but indeed much of it is the creation of many men through more than nineteen centuries of dogma.

Why is it? We have evidence for plenty of unseen forces - gravity, electricity etc - so why should there be no solid, scientific evidence of God? If he's there, it should be provable, I believe.

Fandor said:

Yeah but....there isn't, is there? There is ample evidence that the World is round, hence we abandoned flat Earth theories centuries ago. There is ample evidence that Michael Jackson exists, so some people spend their lives arguing over him in a Prince forum and some just ignore his music and hope he goes away. And so on. If there's ample evidence, then why don't we all accept it as a definite fact? If there's ample evidence, the what is all this talk of faith within the Church? Surely "faith" is just another word for the belief in something you really can't know for certain...?

And if you argue that there is enough evidence in creation and the wonders that surround us to PROVE God exists, you have to accept that there are those who see the destruction and the horrors that surround us as proof that he does NOT.

basically you see what you wanna see in the world and make up your own mind. Either way is fine, just let's neither side pretend they can prove they are right.

biggrin

I can't even come close to representing with mere human letter how Liverpudlians would pronouce that first letter/ vowel combo.

Not without hocking a load of phlegm all over my keyboard and tying my typing finger (for I have just the one. Typing finger, that is, I have the full compliment of fingers otherwise..) in knots.

Oh, the evidence is there. It's just not in "the world" of "destruction and horrors" as those are constructions of man, if we are not just talking about the physical world of the planet. The evidence is in the moral law, that of the altruistic impulse of all mankind. That is just one main example of the evidence. Evidence need not be a matter of material reality.

For anyone who questions why gay men and women have issues with the church, this is most often the face that we see. I detest these people who are not god's ambassadors. They seek to inflict anguish and pain on those already suffering. It's really sickening and I hope that people out there in the church see this crap and think about how they treat others in the name of their faith.

It's coming. I said in another thread about this that I really think there ought to be a law against picketing funerals. It's an accident waiting to happen. You take the raw emotion involved with the loss of a loved one and combine it with venemous hatred from a group like the Westboro Baptist Church and something's going to give.

You know, that is the thing that kills me. People in the church often point to us as examples of what happens to godless people and the reason why we have issues in our lives isn't because we don't have god, it's because of what those who believe in God have DONE TO US in the name of their faith!

Please - those MFers have skeletons in their closets, believe me. It's always the ones who scream the loudest who are up to nonsense. Remember when Swaggart was running his mouth against gays, pornography & indecency? Turns out he was the biggest perv around. Same with the anti-gay politicians. One got caught in the men's room with his pants down, right?

Yes, and because it is a message that is taught and accepted because the bible says something bad about it (it says a lot of other bad shit but we don't go killing all the firstborn males in a town or banish women for being on their period) and the message is allowed to stand and is applauded no matter how hateful it is and otherwise normal and rational people let it slide and don't question because to do so would be to expose themselves to the irrationality of these kinds of people. So they stay silent, nod their heads and another young gay man or woman is tortured in the name of this shit disbelief

That's why gays have to be more angry. These holy rollers want you off the planet - the sh!t is real. Go Black Panther on their ass. No more turning the other cheek - fight fire with fire. Organize, organize, organize and use your vote wisely. Those jokers in Congress may hate you, but they'll pay attention once you get political power.
