Sweeney Todd wasn't nominated for Best Picture?!
Cate Blanchett is a great actress - but she's making a career of playing Queen Elizabeth. Enough already. I am thrilled that Tilda Swinton got a Supporting nod for Michael Clayton. She was incredible in that film. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I really think Michael Clayton should win Best Picture. That was a superb film.

I really liked that one as well!!! George Clooney can win as well, if you ask me! First time where his acting didn't distract me. I really think he nailed it Oh, and for the record, I consider Tilda Swinton a supremely talented actress. Now if she had received as many nominations as Cate over the years, I'd be pleased. I think she's decent, but tremendously overrated, particularly by the Academy. When I watch her, I can see the wheels turning inside her head when she acts, and I have never seen her disappear into a role. JMHO. [Edited 1/22/08 7:22am] Your humble opinion is humbly wrong. She's an actress of tremendous talent. I agree about Tilda Swinton. Great, overlooked actress. I thought for sure she was going to get a nomination a few years back for The Deep End. Didn't happen. Oh well. Speaking of so-so actors - Clooney...again? Come on. Eh, whatever. Not a great year for film, so this may be the second year in a row I don't tune in for the full broadcast.

On the other hand, SO glad to see Sarah Polley got a screenwriting nomination for Away From Her. [Edited 1/22/08 7:06am] Well, The Golden Age wasn't even that good. The talent was wasted by a terrible script and over-the-top production. And I loved the first Elizabeth. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I was forced to watch There Will Be Blood and I hated it. Daniel Day Lewis was good, but at times I thought he was overacting. The rest of it--from the dialogue to the cinematography to the score--was annoying as hell. I hope it doesn't win anything!

. [Edited 1/22/08 14:06pm] i didn't hate it but i didn't know what i was supposed to walk away with when the movie ended. you'd think with all the work and money and craftsmanship they put into that movie, i'd walk out feeling something other than "hmmm, apparently the main character wasn't a very nice man." i realize the power of subtlety and letting folks figure it out on their own, but i felt like it had the potential of communicating several really important messages (especially in this day and age) and it fell just short of delivering any of those messages - in exchange we got pretty cinematography, lotsa scenery chewin' and drop-dead perfect production work. yay?

I still have a couple more to go for some acting and directing nods like I'm Not There, Diving Bell & Butterfly, Away From Her etc. I am really surprised that Angelina Jolie did not get a nom for A Mighty Heart -she was terrific in that. VOTE....EARLY

If it's done the way they've done it in the past, his name won't be there. They list the names of people who died during the eligibility period (roughly the 2007 calendar year).

Excellent observations--totally agree. Yeah--what was their point? I mean, early on Daniel Plainview's character seemed shady, tehn he sort of seemed alright as the preacher character eclipsed him with creepiness, but then at the end they were both fucked up. It was reminding me of Howard Hughes in The Aviator. I didn't even realize the movie was set in California until I went to Amazon to read the review of Sinclair's Oil! which was set in Cali, and even then I was like, "Hmm, wasn't the movie set in Texas?" (Maybe I'm just slow--I didn't realize California had oil...) Ooh, and I hated that they completely skipped World War I! I was waiting, waiting, waiting for them to get to 1914 to see what, if any, effect that had on the oil business and then *poof* they went straight to 1923 or something. And then the movie ended before the Stock Market crash in '29.

And then the movie ended before the Stock Market crash in '29. See, I disagree. I think that the movie was brilliant. I thought Day-Lewis gave an excellent performance - a tour de force. As for the points the movie was getting across - I thought is fairly obvious. Plainview was capitalism personified. The film is based on "OIL" by Upton Sinclair, but the main character was also modeled after Calif oil tycoon, Doheny. It reminded me of John Huston's portrayal of Mulray (who was based on Mulholland - the grandfather of the California metropolitan water system) The progression in which this character evolves into a total misanthrop and the way he interacts with both Eli and his son builds the arc of the story - that alone is interesting on a human level. But the film communicates symbolism in terms of capitalism and this country's fascination with "afluenza" is also poignantly portrayed. It's complex subject matter on both a human and a broader social level. In the end in all narrowed down to Plainview's psycho world instead of expanding outward, which I guess could be off-putitng to some. For me, the classical score was effective, but bothersome and humorless at times. Overall I thought it was very well done. IMHO. VOTE....EARLY
