born in small town of 3000, grew up on a farm. lived in the same house my father was born in in 1931. now no one gives birth there... they drive an hour north to the city. yet when my sister was born on new years day 1968 she didn't even get to be new years baby as some other kid beat her to the punch.
i was jealous of sidewalks to rollerskate on and miles of smooth roads to ride bikes on like my town friends had. if i wanted to rike bike on cement i had to catch the machine shop when it was empty and sweep it nice and clean. friends lived far away so about grade six we started talking on the phone a lot. we still had "party lines" where you shared your phone line with three other neighbors. "rubbering" or listening to conversations was a problem. i knew a schoolmate of mine did it so i finally just said "kelly i know you are on the line you might at well join the conversation" and he did there were 200 kids in my 9-12 highschool. 35 or so in my grad class and we were the "big" town. other schools in the region had 5 or 6 grads at a time. once we had drivers licenses and $10 for gas on occasion we would drive the hour into the city for a movie or just to go to macdonalds. now as an adult i can appreciate the freedom i had on the farm. it's my favorite place in the world. oh and we didn't have any streetlights... just one 4 way stop on main . Why not?... Easier said than done I guess. I didn't go to college after high school and don't see it in the near future so it's gotta be done on my own.

Yeah, I grew up in the house my grandfather grew up in as a boy, and my dad and aunt grew up there too. My parents moved in when my grandparents moved to town in 1978 and they still live there. I'm guessing my brother & sis-in-law will move in eventually because I have no interest in moving back. My parents received a plaque from the State of Iowa last year for having a Centennial Farm (meaning it's been in our family for 100 years). i was jealous of sidewalks to rollerskate on and miles of smooth roads to ride bikes on like my town friends had. if i wanted to rike bike on cement i had to catch the machine shop when it was empty and sweep it nice and clean. friends lived far away so about grade six we started talking on the phone a lot.
Totally relate to everything you said. Even the friend who lived the closest was a mile away and I was not allowed to ride my bike to her place. Even though I grew up in the middle of nowhere, the road that went by our house was a county highway so there was a fair amount of traffic. . [Edited 1/21/08 20:48pm]

Wasn't even a town, just a village 100 or so folks. I escaped, but remember growing up VERY fondly. Absolutely fantastic free fun childhood. Some of my school friends still live there but the towns and villages are really in decline now - not helped by the recent floods. Big Shame.

I was born in Santa Barbara, Ca in 1975. When I was about 5 months old, we moved about 10 miles north to a place called Goleta, Ca. This was, at least, to me a very, very small town.
