I think it gets really good about a third of the way in. Until that point it seems like many amateur films I've seen in that everyone has the same clever over-thought overrought voice of wit, reference, and dry irony.Meaning it seems like it's obviously written by one person who is trying really hard to have an attitude. But then, once the story twists beyond just the numb acceptance of pregnancy and trying to be clever with the dialogue,.. it gets really good.
there is a hilarious backlash against this film from the alternative and indie culture (making fun of it's dialogue style and music choices and identifying it as the mainstream invading and exploiting), but it does get REALLY good once the drama starts. The one thing that bugs me though, is that the boy just accepts anything, he seems to have no attachment himself to the baby. No real drive or internal motivations. And he's supposed to be the sensitive good guy! My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

The one thing that bugs me though, is that the boy just accepts anything, he seems to have no attachment himself to the baby. No real drive or internal motivations. And he's supposed to be the sensitive good guy! i will agree in that i wanted the film to transcend itself a little bit more than it did, though i feel like i'm nitpicking in saying that and i also believe the film does try to shed its snark by the final half hour of the movie, without becoming a total sapfest. it could have gone a little farther but i guess it just didn't want to. i don't see this as a film exploiting indie/alternative culture. quite the opposite. i think it's a film that exploits young moviegoers who otherwise would not ever learn who patti smith or the stooges are if not for some shout-outs from a hip little teen movie. not to mention it's putting kimya dawson on the map (yay!). if a movie can indoctrinate today's youth to listen to better music, i say right on for that. as for the boy's seeming indifference toward everything, well, i knew kids like that when i was in high school. they were so into their little adolescent haze that nothing really seemed to penetrate their world. it was creepy. i can't say i understand it, even now. but i recognized it in that character. teenage boys can be frighteningly dense.

I loved this movie. Ellen Page was awesome. And I love anytime where I can see Jason Bateman's hot ass again .

Are we going to have to fight over this man too? Don't you hate they canceled Arrested Development? They had both Jason Bateman and Will Arnet on the same show.

Good movie. I don't know that I need any more of "Diablo Cody," but I liked it. The dialogue took getting used to, but it really was incredibly funny and often touching.

I've seen it twice. It has two "Arrested Development" cast members in it - that alone is worth the price of admission. And Jennifer Garner is really good in it. But it is Ellen Page's movie. Jason Bateman says that the star of the movie is the script, but I think the script, while funny, could have come off as maudlin or too whimsical, had it not been for the talent of the cast and director.
(And while I commend her for writing something so funny and tight in a mere two months (all while sitting in a Target food court), the Diablo Cody thing is getting a bit old.) "She made me glad to be a man"

I mean it had darkish undertones and witty dialoge (which I still quote) but "goth"? It's a bunch or cliqueish sorority type girls in Senior Year. Yeah folks die, but I see it more of a black comedy than really anything. Christian Zombie Vampires

As soon as Victoria started dating JD, she became shunned by her Heather friends, no? I'm obviously making all this up and there is no ultimate goth film list. I just know among my circle of friends, it was one of those movies that everyone had seen and for the most part liked. . [Edited 1/18/08 13:56pm]

[Edited 1/18/08 13:56pm] Was she shunned? Gosh, it's been so long since I saw that movie. I never thought the other girls liked Victoria anyway and were looking for ways to make her a non-heather. WHat I found interesiting was that even in the elite, there was a pecking order whereas on their own they were considered untouchable. Christian Zombie Vampires

I remember reading that Adam's fans seemed to like them a lot. I forgot that was the guy you told me you liked until I read your post this morning. The Pierces were great. Sometimes their harmonies can be a little eerie. Maybe it was hearing it in the context of their macabre lyrics and synchronized dancing. They reminded me of the Siamese Cats in Lady And The Tramp.
