Abs are made in the kitchen. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Yep. Your diet AND exercise habits need to be in check to reveal that six pack..Just doing crunches will not do anything to lessen the fat that is on top of your abs. You will strengthen your abs with crunches etc, but that layer of fat will still sit on top covering up all of your hard work.

It's a mistake spending a lot of time working your abs, if you don't work all the abdominal muscle groups and your back. One of the biggest causes of back pain is that people spend a lot of time doing crunches - but don't work their back muscles. They end up with a strength imbalance and then wonder why their back hurts. (Machines can also put a lot of stress on your lumbar spine and discs.) Straight crunches work only the rectus abdominus. They don't do anything for the internal and external obliques or the transverse abdominus - all of which you need to work for a strong core.
One of the best core exercises - bar none - is the Turkish get-up (or just a Turkish sit-up). I usually do these with a 26# kettle bell. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

It's an incredible exercise, though. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Starving yourself causes a loss of muscle...which ultimately makes it harder for you to lose fat. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I do watch my diet, and walk a lot in the park on nice days during the spring, summer, and fall. But when it gets too cold outside to walk, and I'm not exercising, and even if I continue to eat healthy foods, I tend to put on about 5-10 pounds (due to inactivity and not exercising). I think I'm going to join a gym, seriously. Once I start working out regularly again, the extra poundage should come off, and hopefully my abs will be more firm. [Edited 1/20/08 11:05am] RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I added what I did because some people (women especially) might not know why undereating is counterproductive. If someone is going to twist what I have said - even if they are just kidding - I'm going to straighten it out. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. I wish I knew too! I am far too lazy to do crunches and the best I can do is walk (fast) home from work. Although the one abdominal "exercise" I ever did really worked, and is still pretty rock hard under the fat Singing! doing it properly that is; works your diaphragm like a b*tch!
Doesn't really count lol but I am proud of the few muscles I have! Good luck Rock n roll baby
