I have NOD32 which is the best by far and its reputation superb. It updates continually and I have never had any trouble. You get a 30 day free trial. Take my word for it you have to pay for the best. Funny enough it is cheaper than Norton. Also if you have trouble with your computer i.e. you cannot get rid of a virus - you let them know and they will eradicate it for you.

Get avast! - it's free and to my mind, very good. Been using it for 3 years now and never a problem. It takes a good while to start up and to do scans but seems to work very well. The on-access scanner seems to pick stuff up quickly as you surf and download too and gives you instant options to close the browser, delete or quarantine a file.

i remember using that once a long time ago and it did work great.but it slowed my system down waayyyy to much.

I'd hook up the HDD to another system and copy the files I need, then wipe the whole gotdamn thing and reload it with a fresh copy of the OS. just don't copy any executables cuz they might get infected, chances are slim this is a macro virus so any office docs are safe to recover I think. Run them through one or more scan engines before usage though, just to be safe.

for comparing AV software there's nothing better than this : http://www.av-comparatives.org/

I personally use AVG but Avast is just as good imho ...

When reinstalling the comp, create a basic account (almost no privileges) that he can use to do general stuff with. If he wants/needs to install software, he can use the admin account ...

There's lots of best practices around for avoiding this kind of situations ...

As of midnight last night I cleaned it all up..... its such a pain in the ass..... I did buy a copy of Norton to run in the background so itdoesnt happen again...

I tried Avast and it wouldnt allow it to load no matter what i did... It would now of course but ive purchased the other...

Thank you one4 and everyone..

there never is a 'best' antivirus, cuz the anti in the name says it all ... it's a reactive technology and you're always dependent on the updates.
In the latest av-comparatives (an independent AV test) NOD32 gets an advanced+ rating where AVG and Avast gets an advanced rating. I don't have time to read the complete report though ...

Oh boy!! I haven't been here in the last couple days because I was ineffectively trying to get rid of what I found today was three backdoor trojans. I was trying to go the cheap route, but it didn't work.

Sooooo, I totally removed spybot and superantispyware or whatever that was called, and went STRAIGHT to Symantec this morning. I downloaded the free 15 day trial of Norton Antivirus 2008, and am going to buy that sucker after the trial expires.

It cleaned it all up and now my computer is running fast and smoothly.

AVG Anti Virus is free and it has worked WONDERS for us!
http://free.grisoft.com/d...s/us/frt/0

SpyBot Search & Destroy & Ad-Aware will help take care of any spyware as well and they are both freebies smile

Hope things get fixed!
