There's a letter for 'a' as in 'father' and one like the 'a' in 'bat' as pronounced with an American accent (ae). Then there's an 'a' very close to a 'u' sound in something halfway between say 'puck' and 'pack'. Then there's a straight up 'a' sound as in just 'pack'. Not to forget a longer 'ae' sound and 'ay' as in 'pay'. All have a separate letter or special character to denote them.

It gets tricky when you consider how words are put together. Consonants are always written on the line, so to speak, in the main part of the text, as in the words of my post here. Some vowels are also always written in amongst the consonants in this fashion. However, others are just special characters you squiggle real small above consonants.

So the tattoo is an 'a' (as in 'father'). It's just that there are so many to choose from and Thais don't look at it the way we do. Their words don't even read from left to right in order of the characters.

It's also the spelling of the word for an aunt/uncle in the case of a father's younger sister or brother.

I like the flourish on the first character.

It's Jungle Jane's handwriting there.....she said that be the A from my name in western spelling.....which is what I wanted! I even doublechecked it with other Thai people! A week later some Thai dude even asked me in english why I had the A tattoed on my foot.....without me telling him first!
