Pick a career for Kay!! I'm in the process of applying to university. I do have a plan of what I want to be, a chemist. Tell me a back up plan if this doesn't end up well! Also, tell me what you do for a living or what you went through to be in school.

Whatever your backup plan is, just make sure it's an area that you truly love ...
I'm a graphic designer and that's pretty much what I went to college to be...I didn't have a back up plan, though I wish I had lol ...it would have been photography, which is my "back up plan" in real life right now.

Hey, thanks Byron. I do love chemistry, I just want to get a feel for what else is out there.

My dad told me that I should make "business" my 2nd major, because he felt art was more of a hobby than something you actually make a living at lol...but with a business degree "You will always have a job". Yeah, ok ...so I took some accounting classes and bidniz economics courses...bored the !#$! out of me.

do what you love. Your fall-back's industry can implode, leaving you scrambling to look for something else. All the while, your "true love" job gathers dust, waiting for you to return to it...
I really need to read this book again...

have you been to thorvaldson bldg and the airplane room? very cool. how they got all those paper airplanes way up in that dome i don't know i didn't study hard enough in university and didn't get help when i needed it. i wanted to be a chemist too. my advice is to sample a few programs through your electives to see if anything catches your fancy. and be prepared to work like the devil and get a tutor if needed!

K The advice so far is correct: Don't stray too far from what you love. If you do -- take it from me -- you may end up financially rewarded, but you may slowly rot from the inside out. I took up print and broadcast journalism through grad school simply because I was good at writing/editing. I worked both for civic news outlets and certain industrial trades. It paid my bills, but writing about the latest local horrors, the state of polymer research or how best to manage your lawn care company was murdering me. Given a battle with depression and some issues elsewhere in my life, I was eventually floored by a sense of utter worthlessness. But your true vocation would/could/should lift you! I realized that long-time "interest" I had in social justice and things theological wasn't just an interest. It's what I'm here to do! And so I've returned to school to pursue that calling, with hopes to marry that passion with talents I developed in my earlier professional life through teaching, scholarly research/writing, ecumenical/interfaith dialogue, advocacy, etc. And it feels like I've finally arrived home! If you decide to go into chemistry, you have lots of choices. Given the hobbies listed in your profile, I'm immediately thinking of some meeting point between pharmaceutics and sports medicine. Or nutrition perhaps. Also, here in Canada, there's a great drive for geological research, environmental surveying... or you could always become a drug dealer. 17's a cool place to be! Do some soul searching, and you could make something really cool for yourself. [Edited 1/12/08 9:21am] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου
