The Buddha said, "Be a light unto yourself."

This of course has several meanings, but my favorite of it's meanings or interpretations is that we are supposed to think for ourselves. (The religion differs from many in that it actually asks you to question what you are told and not to trust everything. In other words, without serious introspection, who do you actually know what you believe is genuinely true?)

One of the probably unintended meanings I actually take from this statement is that one should always depend on oneself for all things. Be that person that you wish to love. Be that person that you find charming. Be that which attracts you.

Perhaps it's because I've been in relationships that have left me jaded, or that I am slowly trying to discover what my own limits are in sexual, personal, and intellectual expression that I so strongly agree with Carrie--though I suspect she probably saw me post statements like this before and just copied them into her own post strictly for the applause. neutral

You need me.

See, I think I could totally be down with the Buddha. I may have to look into it a bit more.

And if I'm honest I'm sure some of this comes from being a bit jaded and from seeing the vast majority of real life examples of relationships cause more harm than good for people. But that's really not a big part. Just a little part.

I agree with Carrie. and i know that mdiver is just celebrating his love as thready said. thats sweet. But you really can make your own world by yourself-without alteration due to compromise or invasion of space or privacy. however being a woman who knows that I don't really need anyone, its nice to have some one to share it with-to lessen the burden. Its nice to be close to someone like that. Friends and relative are nice and just as important but i don't think its the same.

And I agree as well. With all you've said. Hell, I LOVE to be in love.

I just think it's dangerous, particularly for women, to be taught they are nothing without a partner. Especially with how much it's repeated in our culture.

yeah I know. Women really need to know their worth without a man. its I think its kinda hard to balance out for some.

It's ok. She's engrossed in some film where Amanda Byrne pretends to be a man. I'm still waiting for my breafast and it's 11:11am! She NEEDS to make me some breakfast yo! Yeah, I could make it myself, but I'm not confident it wouldn't taste like burnt ass. shrug

Maybe it's different for women... For where we are in this part of history. But even when I've been in the sappiest, gooiest, turn my guts inside out throes of love, I never would have considered myself less or different for not having found that. I've felt like dying when I've had my heart ripped out, sure. But not because I saw my future self as anything less.

ok, we all know and admit that Rogers and Hammerstein are geniuses.

So why are we doubting their words?

Sixteen going on Seventeen lyrics:

You are 16 going on 17
Fellows will fall in line
Eager young lads
And grueways and cads
Will offer you fruit and wine

Totally unprepared are you
To face a world of men
Timid and shy and scared are you
Of things beyond your ken

You need someone
Older and wiser
Telling you what to do
I am 17 going on 18
I'll take care of you

Come on ladies, how can you refuse this brilliance! woot!

Not just that, but it really doesn't matter how close you get to someone, in the end we're all alone.

Not even in "the end"... This is something I've been thinking about for a while now. If we want to be really real, we can never be sure about anything, count on anyone but ourselves. Ultimately we (as in ourselves, alone) are all we have.

I don't believe that for a moment. sorry
