i am confused: career choice. i don't know what i wanna be or major in. i have a few ideas. i either wanna do something in the psychology department, philosophy department or english department.i wanna be fiction writer, but my parents say it will not help me in the future, they say i'll be poor and forgotten(thought,i dont mind that really) i have am more keen for the psychology department, as a child psychologist or to be a ESL teacher or a normal english teacher. the more realistic one would probably be the esl teaching, but i don't know..do i really want to do this? it confuses the hell out of me, what if i pick wrong? personally, i just want to help or entertain people, you know?. sorry if this is trite.. does your school have a career center? like a place where you can go and talk to someone and take a test? There is a test you can take that will kinda steer you in one direction or another. It's also great ammunition against the parents telling you what you should do.
good luck We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color. Maya Angelou

What helped me make a recent (and difficult) career choice was taking some time to think about my intentions of pursuing either path.
Try it why not, and see what answers you come up with Good luck!

I wish I could help you. I still don't know what I want to do.....and I'm 41. Hopefully you can find something that combines all the things that you talked about.
Good luck and dig deep. You will find it. MyeternalgrattitudetoPhil&Val.Herman said "We want sweaty truckers at the truck stop! We want cigar puffing men that look like they wanna beat the living daylights out of us" Val"sporking is spooning with benefits"

[Edited 1/11/08 0:25am] Your parents think being a fiction writer is a risky choice...so you go for psychology and philosophy? Sorry. Lemme hip you to something. You don't walk out of school with an undergrad degree in psychology or philosophy and get a job as a psychologist or philosopher. You need an advanced degree (masters or doctorate) to get a job as a psychologist or social worker. A philosophy degree trains you to do nothing - except (again, with an advanced degree) be an academic. With English, you could teach...but depending on where you are, you'll need a masters in education to do that. Keep in mind that there are a lot of things you can do with a liberal arts undergrad degree, but you will probably not have a job that relates in any way to what your degree is in. (The important thing is that you get the degree - not your field of study.) What do you like to do? If you like to write, look into journalism, public relations, or marketing. Do an internship (or two) in a corporate creative or marketing department. If a non-profit would be more to your liking, do volunteer work that gives you access to the pr or fundraising departments of said non-profits. Keep your fiction writing for after hours - because chances are, you won't make a living at it. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Good luck and dig deep. You will find it. Same here. The things I am interested in pay crap for money. If I am to go to college, spend the money to get a degree, etc. etc., I want to be able to make decent money. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

If I hadn't spent so much money on credit cards my current wage would be WONDERFUL. It's just the darn bills that get me down.
