I hope that's what America is really like or at least is to some degree. I guess we consider the "Southern Accent" to be our version of your cockney accent. It's often looked down on. I find it charming, but being that I had a less than stellar experience growing up in the south, it also sometimes gives me full body shivers. Ok, it does often times does that. When I was in 10th grade I went to a upper-middle class, relatively mixed race school, where having a strong southern accent was frowned upon (I know this is shocking as it was still a school in the deep south right?). Anyhoo, I purposefully mimicked accents that I heard on T.V. or albums. I actually copied the accent, if no the tone, of the lead singer of the Dead Milkmen My current accent/voice/etc. used to be very deliberate. I assume that if I had stayed in Alabama I would have developed a southern accent as most of the folks I knew growing up, speak with a southern accent now, and my sister had one for a few years, until she married and moved to Tampa--it took about 2 years to get rid of. Trust me Laurel--I had a plan early on in life.

I'm a huge fan of different accents. When I was in New York back in the day a cashier at Bloomys told me that she liked my accent. I said "Like, what are you talking about." Right when I said it, I realized.....I'm a valley girl. MyeternalgrattitudetoPhil&Val.Herman said "We want sweaty truckers at the truck stop! We want cigar puffing men that look like they wanna beat the living daylights out of us" Val"sporking is spooning with benefits"
