Golden Globes--CANCELLED! Traditional Golden Globes gala is canceled

Out: the traditional three-hour live ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where celebrities drink, dine, mingle and accept awards for TV and movies from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. In: a one-hour stripped-down NBC News "press conference," Sunday at 9 ET/6 PT, that will soberly announce the winners of the TV and movie awards. The scuttling of the traditional Globes ceremony marks the first major fallout from the writers' strike in a busy awards season. "We are all very disappointed that our traditional awards ceremony will not take place this year and that millions of viewers worldwide will be deprived of seeing many of their favorite stars celebrating 2007's outstanding achievements in motion pictures and television," Jorge Camara, president of the group of overseas journalists that presents the awards, said in a statement. "We take some comfort, however, in knowing that this year's Golden Globe Award recipients will be announced on the date originally scheduled." But a promise from the Writers Guild of America that its members would picket any televised coverage led the Screen Actors Guild to urge its members to stay away. Preliminary plans by the foreign press association and some talent representatives to host red-carpet arrivals and post-Globes parties also were tabled as NBC and others involved with the ceremony feared klieg lights but no celebrities to bask in them. Instead, the network is expected to air a two-hour Dateline special at 7 that had been scheduled for Saturday to commemorate the Globes' 65th anniversary. Tonight's People's Choice Awards on CBS also had to make adjustments. It will feature no live audience, only clips of winners' acceptance speeches. But other shows have not suffered. Monday's Critics' Choice Awards went off without a hitch on VH1, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, due Jan. 27 on TBS and TNT, won a waiver that permits writers to work and ensuring that stars will turn out. NBC will take a financial hit: The network will save the $5 million it pays the foreign press association and Dick Clark Productions to air the awards but will lose much of the $15 million it collects from Globes advertisers, many of whom probably will balk at paying steep prices for a low-key news conference. The network elevated the stature of the Globes, which previously aired on TBS, when it began airing them in 1996. Last year, 20 million viewers tuned in; at its peak in 2004, the telecast drew 26.8 million. [Edited 1/8/08 5:20am] | |
