My mother used to live next to the Scottish guy. They were on the same community housing board. Pretty cool I think! Apparently he's a pretty nice bloke.

I bet he will be locally famous when he gets out. Well for a week anyway.

It's the same as anywhere in the states with local accents, I mean they don't all talk like they do on tv news so they?! Well it's the same here. Not a lot you can do I suppose, get annoyed at people for not understanding or give them a chance and subtitle.

I was in Glasgow and Edinburgh many a moon ago and didn't have as much trouble as I do now (although I found the accent very thick in the former).

Yes, Glasgow is much thicker than Edinburgh. Generally the west is stronger than the east, although I am from 30 miles north of Edinburgh and the level of west coast mining immigration in the last few hundred years is reflected in our accents - I don't sound like I'm from Edinburgh!

Me personally, as an English guy, would say it depends very much on what part of Scotland and how strong their accent is. Mind you, there are plenty of English accents that are impossible to decipher - A strong Geordie accent for example (i.e. someone from Newcastle, which is in the North-east) or even a particularly strong Liverpool accent.
