Purple Rain is a metaphor. It's not meant to be taken seriously.

In order to understand the significance of the symbolism we first have to understand what each of the elements in of the song represent to Prince and piece them together.

Water, which is porported to contain vast amounts of dehydrogen monoxide here in the USA (I'm not sure if this is true in Europe or other parts of the world), is prevailing element in the song. Prince was absolutely obsessed with dehydrogen monoxide throughout his career which is evident in songs like "Something in the Water", "Soft and Wet", and "Melt with U". In the song "Melt with U" prince proclaims, "Don't look now, but there's a river of blood...you must have been a virgin...what am I guilty of?"
If you do your research you'll realize that dehydrogen monoxide is found in large quantities in blood. And from where did this blood come from? You guessed it--a vagina.

So Prince is saying that water equates to vagina. That it is, in fact synomomous with vaginas. This is not to say that there isn't a spiritual angle to all of this, as sometimes, water also represents the divine in Princes symbolism. So we must ask ourselves, is Prince talking about God or pussy?
That's where the significance of the color purple comes in.

Contrary to popular belief, the word 'purple', outside of the song purple rain and various other songs in the album of the same title, is not mentioned that many times in Prince's career. Or at least not as many times as you would expect Prince to mention it.

Prince mentions things that are red... that is, blood. Or in Susanna's Pajamas (the expression of his complection--which means blushing, which means red), he mentions the color red without saying what it is.
Red symbolizes embarassment in that song. In Susanna's Pajamas, Prince says, "Isn't the expression in my complection enough?". Meaning, isn't the embarrassment of my flushed face enough to let you know how I feel about you?

Also, Prince sings about "blue" in many songs, which always means something very sexual like "Blue Light" from the symbol album, or something really depressing like "So Blue".

And what about Purple? Isn't Purple just a combination of red and blue? In other words isn't purple made from blue (the expression for depression) and red (the expression for embarrassment)? And we've established that rain stands for vaginas.

So Purple Rain, literally translated means an depressing, embarrassing, vagina. Prince is saying that he never meant his friendship to end with you, cause you any sorrow, or cause you any pain, but that because of your embarrassing, depressing, vagina, he wants to guide you to the embarrassing, depressing, savior (the other connotation of 'rain'). In other words , if you don't catch my drift, your stank pussy needs some Jesus!

Prince is extremely clever with double meaning in these songs.

Purple Rain lives on as a legacy of Rock and Roll perfection revealing some of his innermost obsessions at that time.

We both know that Prince doesn't go that deep.

I bought recycled carpet, buttnut.
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

I think it's time Dan took some alone time for himself. Apparently he's fiercely protective of it.
