I loved the book but I'm not sure about the film. Keira Knightley is irritating despite her looks.

confused I didn't like it. I liked the film in general, but the ending ruined it for me. I just thought the main character was a bit useless. It wasnt so much "atonement", as "easing her conscience". A bit of a sell out. I didn't like her, the older one. shrug

Have you read it? The book is much more than an 'easing of conscience' tale. It's hard for me to be objective as I haven't seen the film but I suspect this hasn't come across?

One4All4Ever

I just read about the amazing 'long tracking shot' .

Apart from the movie itself, that is something I really want to see nod

Yeah, I saw that NYT piece before I saw the movie yesterday. I read a little bit of it, then stopped because I didn't want to ruin it when I would see the movie.

I was about 2 minutes into it before I realized that I was watching it. lol It was dizzying but good.

I find her looks kind of irritating. She's more of a "handsome woman" than a pretty one. And awfully, terribly thin. shake

The ending was hard, but kind of expected. I just wasn't sure how they would deliver it it.

It's the next book on my list to read, for sure.

hmmm I don't think it was that much of an "easing of the conscience" film, though that note is sounded strongly at the end. I think (and I say this having not yet read the book) that note had to be sounded as it was to explain the jarring and not-yet-explained preceding "reunion" scene in Ce's apartment.

Found the book completely and utterly boring and have no desire to see the movie. Sorry. shrug

No I haven't, and I wouldn't be surprised if the book were better than the film but I expect you're right. It was just one of those "is that it?" moments. Probably a lot missed out from the book.

Don't be so sure--'is that it?' was pretty much my reaction to the entire book. The only exciting part of the book, imo, was the letter (being vague here so as not to spoil anything), and it took forever just to get to that. Then after that, more boredom. Even the part when he was in the war was boring and I usually love books set during WWII.

Often times a movie can quite live up to the book it's based on

hmmm do not know if I will see this or not
