BUT, on another note....68 degrees? HAH! I don't have control over the heat and my room gets down to 54 degrees during the winter! When the heat does kick on it gets so hot I have to open a window!

$550 a month with all utilities....I'll take the disadvantages! I run my 2 a/c's all summer!

Do you rent? They had better fix it pronto!! Per Minnesota state law, landlords MUST have maintain 68 degrees or higher in all renter units in the winter months. I'm sure your state would have similar provisions...

Yes I rent. The house is an old mansion with 16 apts and rent is ridiculously cheap so I am not going to complain. The old heater was outside when I got home yesterday and man was that thing beat up and OLD! I bet it was the original one from when the house was built. They are doing their best, shit happens and it happened over the holidays so they are doing it as quickly as possible.

ahhhhh... yeah, I know how it goes. Sounds like it may even be done today.

Still, it's awful when you can see your breath in your own house.

My last apartment used to get quite cold too. But because of the great rent deal I had I never did anything about it either. lol

O.K. so stop the oven bullshit immediately...get a couple of big pots and fill them with water and put them on the stove with a medium heat (not boiling but close) then take a cheap fan and put it so it blows from the kitchen into the rest of your apartment. The steam heat will warm things up and as long as you keep water in the pots you'll be warm.

Take care of yourself, dress in layers and break out the big blankets for sleeping...

I don't leave the oven on at night, just when I'm in the living room and I don't leave it on for long. I've boiled a few pots of water but really, it doesn't help much. My ceilings are 15 feet high so nothing really helps. It just sucks that this has happened on the coldest nights of this winter so far!

Taking this long to resolve the issue has got to be a huge violation of your states laws by now.

I called the landlord last night and he was very apologetic. It's not his fault, he replaced the boiler 7 years ago and it malfunctioned. He offered to bring me heaters but it wouldn't matter because it would just short circuit! He's a good landlord and feels terrible, there is just nothing he can do that he hasn't done already. It's a huge job...the house is a mansion converted into 16 apartments...it's HUGE! Because it happened over the holidays he couldn't find anyone to come any sooner. Shit happens. Unfortunately.

So then my final suggestion is an oil based radiator from Home Depot. It's just a radiator that plugs in and the oil warms up and circulates. It doesn't use a lot of electricity (blowing fuses) and if you use the cheap window fan to blow the air then that should help. It's a good, cheap, thing to keep warm even when you're heats on and won't drain a ton of electricity.

Oh yeah, the radiator thing shouldn't more than $25

He needs to update the wiring of that building if it short circuits ever time she plugs in a heater.

CarrieLee, You should also get some kind of discount on next month's rent. Seriously, I would have definitely moved out and I would not have been so kind.

I don't know exactly where you live but I think you are somewhere in New England, close to where I'm from (MA/RI?), and I know for a fact that there are heating companies and repairmen that will come that day or the next morning if you call them saying that you have no heat, holidays or no holidays. My father owns an apartment building that is a converted historical house and he has dealt with heaters, boilers, etc. giving out around the holidays, in the middle of the night, and when it's cold as all hell and I don't think he's ever had to wait more than 18 hours for them to arrive and fix the problem.

It sucks for your landlord but problems like this are a large part of what being a landlord is all about. He needed to get that thing fixed days ago. Waking up in a room that is 38 degrees is beyond ridiculous.
[Edited 1/5/08 6:03am]

Oops..I just spoke to my dad. He said that boiler problems take forever to fix but he should at least get you some heaters or whatever. I know you mentioned the short circuit problem but I believe they have battery operated ones. Or Sweet Jesus, he should put you guys up in a motel or SOMETHING. It's just inhumane to have to wake up in a room that is 38 degrees.

comfort
