Ok, so it sounds like they'll give me a few (hate 'em) injections, file down my tooth, make a mould, and then I'll come back for the crown to be cemented on top?
Sounds expensive. | |

I don't know if I need a root canal though. Looks like they could just file this sucker down and make a crown for it. There's no pain at all, which surely must be a good thing?

I broke a tooth about 2 or 3 months ago. Strangely, it feels better now than it did for the year prior, after it had cracked (I'm guessing). I went to a dentist, and he said they couldn't do a root canal and crown, because it was broken too far down close to the bone to attach the crown to anything.
So it's going to have to be pulled Eventually. When I get around to it. They did tell me it was the best one to have break, though, if there is such a thing. My back, bottom molar. Otherwise my teeth would shift in a weird way and I'd have an odd bite. Still, it's depressing knowing you're going to have to lose a tooth "Half of what I say is meaningless; but I say it so that the other half may reach you." - Kahlil Gibran

I could be in the same situation. Mine broke off pretty low down, close to the gum line. Maybe I can't just get a crown either.

This is why I carry dental insurance for my family. We get check-ups and cleaning every six months plus coverage for dental work.
I've had three crowns the past 8 years, after replacing childhood fillings. I think it depends on the dentist for the numbing medicine that's given. With my dentist, a topical anesthetic is given, then the gums are injected with lidocaine for deeper effect. As mentioned, the tooth is ground down, and a mold made of the area. It takes up to a week to get the permanent mold back, and you can't eat anything chewy with the temporary mold, (like sushi) or it comes off. You can stick it back on with gum, if needed. The gold crown is sturdier, vs the tooth colored alternative. The latter break easier, and have to be replaced. Are you drinking enough milk?

The porcelain crowns are more expensive and break easier. Your choice depends on how important cosmetic appearance is to you. I went with the gold crown, as I prefer to avoid a repeat performance and it was at the back of my mouth and not that visible.

You may want to make sure you're getting the recommended amounts of calcium and Vit D in your diet.
Biting on something rock hard will damage a tooth, no matter how healthy your bones are.
