If you've seen "The Ring", discuss it here - WARNING: POTENTIAL SPOILERS

I just got back from seeing "The Ring".

Suprisingly, for a PG-13 movie, its scarier than any R rated horror flick Ive seen in the past few years. Theres really no violence, very very little blood, no sex, and no supermodel teens.

I was pretty disoriented walking out of the theatre after seeing it. Most of what I liked about it lies in the story line and the suspense of it all. The acting was flat, the characters were annoying, but the reason behind "The Ring" is a trip and picks up the slack, and then some.

My first reaction to "the tape" was that it was a hokey pretentious "art flick". I was really pleased to later see that each scene has some significance and relevance.

The movie kind of progresses like an episode of Law & Order, where you start out with some mystery and the lead character is on a mission to unearth the history of it.

Theres a bit of a suprise at the end, but it doesnt turn the whole movie belly up and make the first hour and a half pointless. (I HATE when a horror movie ends with the person waking up screaming and the whole thing was a dream).

I felt whoever wrote it though was so enamored by telling this tale of The Ring, that he/she left alot if illogical gaps in the movie as a whole. Can any of you who saw it explain:

- Who the heck was watching the kid, while the Mom and Dad were running around uncovering clues during the last few days???

- What was the significance of the Nosebleeds?

- When did the initial murder of the girl occur? It looked like it was at least a few decades ago, before VCRs were even around. So how would this little girl even know to carry on her legacy on a VHS tape?

- Why did the story dwell on the horses? Ultimately they really had nothing to do with the plight of the little girl. They were just one of Anne's hobbies.

- Why did Anne's husband go through all that trouble wiring up all that equipment to shock himself?? Why didnt he just jump in the tub and grab a plug?

I liked the original movie better... I didn't understand why they added the whole horse thing and all that in the movie.

All-in-all, they did a very good job of remaking the movie, but the original was just more frightening and creepy to me. There was a lot more impact in the original when the girl crawled out of the well and then crawled out of the television... the scene was at night and it was genuinely frightening.

There was more of a sense of urgency in the original movie as well... it was much more tense and moody.

BUT:

I really did like the remake and I probably would have liked it a whole lot more if I wasn't a huge fan of the original Japanese movie.

I would recommend seeing this movie... then you MUST see the original.
