Yoga??

ok...so I wanna try something new and yoga has always interested me but I really haven't much knowledge of it...is it mainly a mental/spiritual thing or is it physically demanding too...how much time would I have to dedicate to it...is it something I could do at home, 'cause I don't see me going to an instructor...a friend of a friend told me it's great exercise and since both my ankles are shot all to hell, as is one knee, it seems like it may be a good low impact regimen...any ideas or info would be appreciated...

I have no experience with yoga. I did take a pilates class for a while and that was fantastic. I also have problems with my ankles and one of my knees and and I found that to be a great low impact excerise nod

I kinda want to get back into pilates again hmmm

I love it!

I do it now and again at home, but I was taking a class for a long time. It's low impact, yes, but I wonder if an instructor wouldn't be handy with your ankle and knees issues... They can offer modifications to poses for beginners or those with specific concern areas.

And it's HARD WORK. I didn't expect it to be when I first started, but within about 10 minutes I usually break out into a sweat. It's good stuff.

I can say, I never feel better, body and mind, as after a yoga session.

I should really get back in the discipline. lol

I know that certain types of Yoga are very physical, Eshtanga Yoga (spell?) for example. That's supposed to tone you right up.

Which, in your case, is not far from the truth.

May the force be with you. NICE light sabre, though. Glow in the dark, I see?

Look into Tai Chi as well.

It's a bit easier to do than yoga. During the course of a normal 1 hour Tai Chi workout (which looks like a very slow, methodical ballet) it's said that you actually massage 98% of the muscles in your body.

A lot of gyms offer yoga classes as part of their regular class schedule. That's where I was taking mine (and no extra fee!). In fact, I think you've inspired me to go tomorrow morning. smile
But if you can't find a gym with a class, a dvd would be a good start. Just listen to your body when it comes to the ankle and knee stuff. Even a simple downward dog pose (which is considered a "resting" pose) could be hard on the ankles at first. But you'd work up to them in no time.

Buy a dvd and do it at home.

It takes about a week to be able to do the moves properly so don't give up when it's first hard to do.

You'll see results in flexibility, balance and lowering your stress levels almost immediately. You'll see increased strength shortly there after.

It's absolutely worth doing. You feel great after a session.

And do it 3-4 times a week. Even a 20 minute session makes a difference.

co-sign, I've heard that as well... one of my good friends do it, he says it's very challenging and not to let the looks of it fool you...it's a nice workout.

I used to enjoy going to a class once an week and then every morning I would do it in my exercise room. You need to have a space that is calming and private so you can concentrate without distractions.
I have several books and DVD's so I could learn new poses to keep from getting bored.
It is very good for your posture, makes you feel taller and strengthens your core.

Yoga's the greatest. It seems especially demanding the less flexible you are. At least for me.

Just make sure you don't force anything. Just approximate what they're doing without straining.

You'll be surprised at how much you're sweating and how tired you're getting just by raising your arms and turning your head! smile
