Well, becuz we want to maintain our high standard of living, we let the people in China do our crappy work. Also, they have smaller hands for the assembling of your toys and do not care if they work in toxic environment.

because that way you don't have to think too much about where anything and everything was made. You automatically know it was made in china.

I'm sure it starts with the fact their wages are still just a fraction of ours, and their workforce is enormous. The toxic thing is unfortunate - is there no national Occupational Health and Safety body yet whose rules MUST be adhered to? or unions to protect the workforce? they probably don't know the dangers of what they are exposed to confused I'm sure they would care if they did.

Things aren't made so much in Thailand either. Not cheap enough anymore. No more sweatshops, the country's not poor enough.

I saw a doco about Ericsson's mobile phone factory, and the workers were eating lunch next to a large vat of chemicals. Nobody seemed to know what it was in there exactly. The company providing the parts to Ericsson needed to cut corners (and were totally prepared to do so) to do it for the price they were screwed down to. Ericsson's people were appalled, yet how can they be sure that if they agree to higher prices that anything will change (ie. conditions) except the profit margin confused

lol

Was that their answer or yours?

It's their shit being made, yet somehow it's supposed to be accepted that they can't control conditions in the factories? It all sucks, and yet we love it. sigh

Surely they should monitor these things, but the truth is of course they just want to farm it all out, deal with the finances, get the products and turn a blind eye to quite how it all gets done.

yup

I wish some things could just be made law sad like if your manufacturer does NOT have XX safety standards etc, they cannot be contracted, but I guess certification can simply be bought.
