I think Bhutto's gender was irrelevant. She posed a threat to her opponent(s). She returned to her country, knowing she would be an assassination target immediately (and she was). And, she continually staged very public protest rallies with very little regard for her personal safety.

It was a matter of time. Any chauvinistic feelings, IMO, were purely secondary to her primary contention for a return to power. If anything, she was treated the same way any man in her position who posed the same threat and who continually made himself available to assassins would have been.
