I'm from Texas and was once talking to a NY customer of the bank where I work. I told her she had a branch on "Hewston" St, well she proceeded to correct me that it was pronounced "Houseton". I told her, "Bitch, I'm from Texas and it's "Hewston". You MF's are saying it the wrong way!!" Then I got fired. confused Not really, but a conversation like that really did happen and you can best believe that's what I was thinking... biggrin

when i was a newbie in NYC, i always said "hewston street" and it was a surefire way of marking myself as a n00b. it may not make sense, but since when have new yorkers and texans agreed on much of anything?

Ha! giggle

Only when I put on my fake accent and say "ta-ma-toes" or "lozenges"...it works better when you see the faces I have to make to say it that way.

I tend to say certain words that I have never used before in my life. It scares me when one of those words comes out of my mouth without thinking about it.

i was just thinking about this the other day and how weird English is. with English, vowel sounds are always changing, while with other languages (like Spanish), vowels pretty much have the same pronunciation all the time. the words i think of all the time with this are:

Washington = the 'a' makes an 'ah' sound

-and-

Ashington = the 'a' here is a short 'a'

I think it's kind of funny how, if you add/take off the 'w', it changes the entire pronunciation of the word.
