I'm un-couth as a mothaphucka, but i'm trying to dial up my couthness.
So, I'm trying to explore the vast world of the vinery (wine folks) and
I don't have the slightest clue as to what's good and what's not.

Any ideas? What do you like?

So far I've liked the fruity wines, like Arbor Mist's Sangria and the Barefoot White Zinfendel...

I tried the Barefoot Pinot Nior...that shit was NAS-TEE! Tasted like a combo
of wood and smelly feet.

I am also going to try (its in my rack now) the Chardonnay and a Merlot, both
by Barefoot.

My understanding is that a dark wine is to be served at room temp, whereas a lighter wine is to be chilled...is this correct?

my favorite kind of wine is beaujolais because it's good quality wine for cheap, and because it's a red wine you can serve either room temperature or chilled. it's best if you buy it around october, but i think you can find it year 'round.

Barefoot is nasty as hell try the Fisheye wines, esp. their chardonnay its cheap and yummy. I prefer reds, I tend to get a headache with the whites.

I love French Bordeaux (St. Julestine) if I can find it. Ports, merlots, shiraz, not to crazy for the pinot-noirs, but I'm getting a love for some of the dessert wines like brachetto (D' Acqui) I drink that stuff like its water.

You can find good tasting wines in all price categories, the trick is to find the "notes" that you prefer in a wine. I love fruity with a warm hint of either vanilla or chocolate, but I hate the crap that tastes like i just licked a piece of pine (yuck) That "woodsy" shit you can keep, and the Barefoot merlot is just nasty.

Wine is by far my favorite type of alcohol.
I don't really have a fav brand but I do love PALE ROSE WINES.

I also love Spritzers based on rose wine.

I still love Rosemount Estate Shiraz, though it's not quite as good as it was maybe 3 years ago.


I was just given Wyndham Estate's Bin 555 Shiraz and that's usually a pretty good red.

In general whites are chilled, reds are room temperature, but as Anxy said, there are reds that can be chilled.

If you're just starting out and prefer fruitier, sweeter wines, try a nice reisling in the whites and a nice shiraz for the reds. Once you start to appreciate those, you can move on to the less sweet stuff.

PS - There's no need to spend $50 for a good bottle of wine, but up to about $20 you get what you pay for. The cheaper wines tend to taste that way and so on. When I go wine shopping, if I'm bringing the bottle to someone else's house, I always ask for advice. I tell them vaguely what I'm looking for, how much I want to spend and they almost always pick out something lovely for me. Then you just have to remember what you liked and what you didn't.

Starter wines. The reasonably priced ultra safe could never offend even non wine drinkers choice was always Jacob's Creek Chardonnay.

I like german wines the Riesling Auslese and Spatlese. My current wine of choice is a california which is odd because growing up there I never liked california wines, but I have been drinking the hell out of the Sutter Home Moscato. Its a sweet wine and cheap too


for red I love the Riunite Lambrusco and I have tried other lambruscos and didn't like them, same with merlot too woody I do like the wild vines blackberry merlot. I guess I like my wine like my kool aid cheap and really sweet at least its not Mogen David

other than what i mentioned above, i really haven't settled on a favorite brand or variety of wine. as a general rule, if i'm at a liquor store and i'm shopping for a dinner wine, i'll go with a reasonably-priced bottle of something that looks like it was made locally or from a small winery. that's partly to give my money to "the little guy" and it's partly because they have cooler looking labels , but also it's partly because i'm usually rewarded with really yummy, unique tasting wine.

i dig wines where u can stick ur finger in the bottom...the deeper, the better

I tried like HELL to get into red wine last year & I'm still not truly satisfied with it. But I'm a cheap bitch, I get Guenoc cabernet from TJ's for like $9 Somebody suggest a good $25 red, por favor. Without knowing what I'm doing I don't wanna spend that much without guidance. Many wine stores offer wine tasting classes which I recommend. The only way to determine what's best for your palate, is sampling a variety. Classes also help define what's "fruity", "oaky", "earthy" etc. Some restuarants also have a wine pairing meal. The dinner/pairing offered at 3121 at the Rio was excellant.
If I'm out of town, and looking for a good bottle of wine and don't have any assistance/unfamiliar with the supply, going with >14% alcohol always works. They're the more expensive wines, though.

Agreed. Usually, one can find good quality Pinot Gris, Pinot Noirs/Burgundy Wines at TJ's or Fresh Market (just to name a few) for a reasonable price. The name of the game is shop around especially when you use Wine for meal preparation like yours truly.
