Anyone here who remembers this super-strong "Viking" guy? I just watched a documentary about Jón Páll Sigmarsson, often referred to as John Paul Sigmarsson outside of Iceland, one of the biggest names ever in bodybuilding and strongman competitions. He won the title "World Strongest Man" 4 times in the 1980s and 1990s. He tragically died from heart failure while doing a deadlift, on January 16th 1993, only 32 years old. IMO he is one of the few famous people I remember from my childhood that truly made me feel proud of being Icelandic.
He also was not shy about his origins nor his strength. He shouted often in competitions one-liners like : "I'm from Iceland!" "I'm not an Eskimo, I'm a Viking!" and his Icelandic phrase: "Þetta er ekkert mál fyrir Jón Pál"", which means: "It's no problem for Jón Páll" Here are some excerpts from this documentary: | |
