My relatives are shockingly bad when it comes to buying us presents. They were dire this year too with the purchase of a guide to 'Britain's Churches' for my Mum and Dad and an Oasis DVD for my Dad who has no passing interest in Oasis! Last year, what should they buy my Dad in the way of literature...

What the fuck are they thinking!?!?!?!

Dunno, but Marilyn Manson is one scary dude.

Although not as much I don't think these days. He used to look vile with those black teeth. My Dad is in his mid-fifties, likes Van Morrison and is English... an ideal gift.

guess I'm the asshole, 'cause I've returned all kinds of stuff...I hate having things around that are never used...I'm notorious for throwing away or giving away things that never get used, so it seems better to me to exchange or return gifts that will never see the light of day around me...I've never regifted...well, maybe once but it was an emergency..

You're not an asshole. no no no! My family always asks for gift certificates, because half the time, nobody knows what they want. So having a gift certificate comes in handy, because the receipient can buy whatever he/she wants. If we didn't do the gift certificate thing, we all would be throwing/giving away stuff that we didn't want as well. lol

Anxiety

the most insane thing i ever got for christmas was about 6 years ago or so, when my grandmother got me a porcelain statue of a wizard with a gazing ball that opened up so you had a little secret compartment. it was a total weed stash statue, but i don't think my grandma realized it. lol

anyway, i kept it in my closet for a couple of years and every now and then i would take it out and marvel at its wrongness...ultimately i donated it to the charity shop around the block from where i lived.

I do it all the time. If they're not willing to put some thought into what they'd think I like, or just have no idea what I'd like, or didn't bother to ask me or get the specific thing that I asked for (and I *rarely* even have a specific thing that I ask for), or it doesn't fit, then I have no problem returning it. In fact, I've probably returned about half of the Christmas presents ever given to me.

My closet is full of nick nacks my dear 81 year old aunt buys me each year from Ross. She is a sweetheart of a lady, but she has a thing for Ross, nick nacks...ring holders, ash trays, ( I have never smoked a day in my life)
little porcelain people, etc. I keep them handy (in my closet) just incase she asks "Whatever happened to that porcelain little cat I gave you in 1992?"
