"The Kite Runner" (the book)

Has anyone read this? I loved it. It's rare that a novel can get me choked up, but by the end of this one, I was almost in tears.

I see a movie's coming out.

I agree. A lot of the "twists" were a bit over the top, and only there in order to advance the emotional arc of the character, rather than being believable. But I loved it anyway.

As far as modern bestsellers are concerned, it is one of the best I've read. A satisfying and gripping read.

But it's not going to hold a candle to the true literary powerhouses of the last century

I've seen and heard about it. Without giving too much away what's it all about?

I read this ages ago, it's still on my book shelf (a good sign) and I really enjoyed it.

I bet it's going to be one of those films that is no where near as good as the book, they are always a disapointment. ie Da Vinci Code, Geisha ... the list is endless.

It is a great book.

I thought this was quite intresting.....

"Now, no matter what the mullah teaches, there is only one sin, only one. And that is theft. Every other sin is a variation of theft. Do you understand that?

"When you kill a man, you steal a life," Baba said. "You steal his wife’s right to a husband, rob his children of a father. When you tell a lie, you steal someone’s right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness. Do you see?"

Two boys growing up Afghanistan (in the 90s, I think--post Russian war but pre- 9/11/01 for the most part) and how they are treated by each other and others based on their class and ethnicity. We read it in my book club and it was one of the few books I liked. I don't really have any interest in seeing the movie, though. shrug
