Mach said: liberation said: Don't laugh at my childhood trauma!!
I was quite young when my older brothers made the "slip" - I remember feeling hurt Thus - I made the choice as a parent not to mislead my children in that way We saw it more as a tradition than "misleading" our daughter...When she finally did ask if there was a Santa Claus, my ex-wife was upfront with her but in a gentle way. My ex told me that she was fine with it, but slightly disappointed (I think it was harder on my ex than it was on my daughter lol). So when I got home from work I took my daughter to the mall with me, and went into Toys R Us...I asked her "What kind of toy do you think a 5 year old girl would love getting for Xmas?"...She asked me who I was talking about, and I said "nobody, just any 5 year old girl". She was confused but started picking out dolls and stuff...I asked her questions about each thing she chose, what made her pick it, etc...after a few minutes she was really into it lol. So after deciding on a good toy for a 5 year old girl, I took it (a doll) and my daughter and I went up to the register to buy it. She asked me "Who is this for?" and I said "I don't know"...then after paying for it, I gave it to her and pointed over to the Toys 4 Tots donation box near the entrance of the store, and told her to drop it in. She liked doing that lol ... After she did, I leaned over and said "There...some little 5 year old girl is going to get that for Xmas this year, and will never know it was from us."...My daughter smiled. I then said "For her, do you think there's a Santa Claus?"...she thought for a second, then smiled again. I said "Trust me...Santa is real, sweetheart", and gave her a hug. Trauma neutralized lol... Turned out she pretty much already knew her mother and I were the ones getting the gifts before then anyway lol ...but, yanno, she enjoyed the season completely and that included the entire Santa Claus aspect, whether she still fully believed in it or not as she got older.

I can imagine the conversation that morning: "Son, it is not what you think" "Mom, dad, why didn't you tell me you were elves. I hate y'all"

That's a beautiful story It is kinda a cute tradition ( Santa ) To me though it would feel like misleading my children, society type tradition or not, if I told them a big ole dude magically did all that jazz people say he does I have nothing against the whole Sanata thing other people choose to do - I just can't do it

And I agree, I don't think Christmas is any better or any worse for a child whether they "believe" in Santa or not ...no harm done either way.

My mom was not into the whole Santa thing. She let me know at an early age that she bought the gifts for me and I should be thankful to HER not Santa.
She did not do things like the tooth fairy - she never wanted me to believe in fairy tales and make believe. She felt it was her job to remind me that life was not easy nor fun so I might as well get used to that fact so I would not be disappointed as an adult. I worked with a lady who's parents kept up the Santa, fairy tale stories until she was in her teens and someone at school ruined it for her. She was in her 60's and still very hurt by finding out that all of the silly little things her parents made her believe when she was younger was all made up stories and not real.

I'm glad my parents did the whole Santa thing. And I look forward to doing it for my kids....if I ever have any. It's a lie but it's not like you're lying about who's their dad. I always thought of it as kind of a little joke that my parents played on me, not as a lie. Shake it til ya make it

HAHA...
I remember finding out and not caring one bit. I actually faked believing for a while so the older members in my family would give me more stuff. All that mattered to me was that dad showered me with gifts X-Mas morning.. GOD I was such a brat back in the day....
