It's funny..it seems like Christmas is hard for everyone this year. Just must be the year. Hopefully next year will be better.

I am not sure if I would go as far as hating it, as there was a time when I was young and at school and enjoyed the fact that we got two weeks holidays. Over the years I have always hated the commercial and superficial side which is notorious in GB and Ireland, and I expect in America as well. The best xmas´s I have had in the last 10 yrs were in the south of Austria. There it is celebrated on the evening of the 24th and is much more focused on family rather than the commercial side of it.

Although I do miss the xmas eve get togethers with old school friends in Ireland and resembling the holy ghost on xmas day lol

Yes here in Austria it is celebrated on the evening of the 24th and it's not Santa Claus who is bringing the presents but the "Christkind" (the child of Christ), but it is more and more commercialized each year here as well.

The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live. smile

I only celebrate xmas because my of my children. I think xmas is overrated and the true meaning has been very much ignored.

generally i enjoy most aspects of the holiday season. this year, however, it is not a very joyous occasion and ill be glad when its nothing more than a distant, faded memory.

I don't hate Christmas. There are some really wonderful things like seeing my boys excited about Santa coming, the food, making cookies.

Just being lazy and relaxing. Watching the lights on the tree and all the houses. Listening to Christmas tunes...

BUT, I do hate all of the stores being crowded, the insanity that possesses people to fight for toys.

I don't think I could ever hate Roodboi though.

I hate what it's evolved to....I came to despise the season when I worked in retail...but the flip side is that since 1999, I've been deployed away from home during Christmas a couple of times, so being with the family during the season is a plus...

..I also lost the feel for the season when my sister stopped speaking to me for an entire year because I got her a gift that she didn't think very much of...

I do. I don't celebrate it in the fist place I just don't like it. Everyone gets so phony and they pretend to like you and fell bad so they give you gifts anyway...and I don't get it. Everyone is so happy and nice to one another for ONE DAY or one week or one month. What about the rest of the year? I'm the type of person who will get a gift for someone randomly and through out the year. I don't think its necessary to wait once a year to be nice. And if I don't like someone why would I be a hypocrite on one day just to show some xmas spirit. And don't get me started on the background of the holiday....

Normally I love Christmas....but I have to say, this year, is a hard year. And to be honest..I could probably skip this one.

Don't get me wrong...I don't hate Christmas...but I think some of the meaning has been lost, and it's become more about buying gifts then what Christmas is really about.

nod This is exactly how I feel too. For some reason, my mom and oldest brother think that we still need to buy each other gifts. I can see buying gifts for my little nephews and niece, but why my older brothers and parents? They're all college educated, make waaaaay more money than I ever will in life, and are not wanting for anything, really. I would be happy with just gifts for the little ones, just spending time with my family, and eating my mom's delicious home-cooking. But I honestly don't see that happening, which is silly, because none of the adults ever know what they want for Christmas, so they just all ask for gift cards. It just seems like a serious waste of time and money for all involved. I don't see it changing any time soon, so I just have to go with the flow.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Actually, gift cards aren't the best way to go: you either have to spend exactly the amount,(unlikely) or less, in which case the store makes out, or MORE, and the store makes out. Give cash or a check. This was in the WSJ.

What I'd do with those in the family who have everything, and knowing what their lifestyle is about: go to TJMAXX!
Specialty Coffees,(Jamaican Blue Mtn blend, sure, it's a blend but unless you want to spring for $50/#..) For cooks: pure maple syrup, fancy olive oils, mustards, knives of good German quality, cutting boards, neat serving dishes hand painted. Check out the food section.
And cool, cheap baskets, for presentation.
Or....how about a great down pillow? Bath towels with Egyptian cotton that are plush and absorbant.
None of this is expensive, at all. 50% off. And it's a wrapped gift for under the tree.
I can be a real Martha Stewart..... razz

Totally agree. I even refuse to spell it out--I always write it as xmas. I am skipping it this year (not going to visit my fam) and it fuckin' rocks. It's almost like there really is no xmas this year. I have no decorations up, didn't buy gifts (thus avoiding the crowds and commercialism). I love no xmas! yay!

I don't like what its become to most people and especially kids.

Most kids wouldn't have a clue [or care that much] about what it really means, they just want presents.

It was evil marketing genius whoever decided to associate Christmas with toys and gifts - it's up there with McDonalds deciding to market their food to kids. It's foolproof, but at what price?

I don't enjoy the "opening of presents" at Christmas because it's all just rip em open as fast as you can, give it a once over then rip open the next til you're done then play with the "best" one while everything else is forgotten because it doesn't move or isn't a Bratz doll.

it certainly happens to me nod

sometimes for reasons i couldn't even tell ya (seasonal affective winter blah crap) and sometimes for reasons that are pretty easy to guess.

this year will be my first christmas ever without the family i've been used to celebrating with my entire life; my grandmother died the day after christmas last year and my mom died september of this year. it's hard, but in a way i'm totally on-board for getting through it and finding a new way to appreciate christmas with the people i still have around me, while keeping my family's memory in tact as part of my personal traditions for the holiday.

it's going to be a hard christmas, but i can't say it will be the worst christmas. the worst would be the previous two years when i had to watch my mom and grandma get sicker and suffer more. at least now they're free from their pain.

i guess with all this on my mind, i can't be bothered to be cynical about over-commercialization or religious bickering or whatever else. i'm just struggling with the personal meaning of this time of year to me - family history, and the fact that a huge chapter of that history has come to a close.

wow, that got deep lol
