Fashion in Action : Is there any way to stand out anymore?

I don't know about you, but I live downtown in a big city. In the subway, on the street, inside office towers and shops, I see a lot of fashion styles, from your punk, alternative look to glamorous fashion. But lately, I noticed that nothing stands out anymore...Everyone is wearing more of the same, me included...

I have NO interest in wearing fashionable clothes myself, but I like to see something interesting once in a while. It would be great to see something that really stands out.. even if it's shocking or in bad taste. I mean, I have seen almost everything you are likely to encounter in a metropolis, from fabullous gowns to weird, spiky harnesses, to say nothing of those who might as well just be wearing a sock on their genitals..

We need to make a little effort. How do you propose to make the streets of our cities more vibrant? What do you wear when you want to be noticed?

Being happy doesn't mean that everything is perfect, it means you've decided to look beyond the imperfections... unknown

I'm one of those women that do not like to stand out in the crowd. I'd much rather blend in with the wood work rather than being noticed. I guess I'm just a little shy like that.

Nice of you to say so. I'm not worried about myself, I'm sorried about other people. They need to stand out more, so that it's a bit more exciting to walk down the street or into an establishment or institution of one kind or another.I myself have no problem standing out, especially not now with the implant drawing curious looks everywhere I go.

I got to thinking... Since I have no intention of growing hair long enough to hide it, and the S scar that marks the side of my head like an inkless tattoo, I might as well embrace it.

I have decided that, on certain evenings, I will wear purple shells on my processor, with a matching purple piece over the coil that will be adorned with Org symbol. smile

i'm bored by 'trends'; the notion of buying what's in style for the sake of 'being in style' is not my thing. can you say 'lemming'? and personally i think the fashion industry plays jokes on us to see how gullible we are. take this summer's capri pants and half sleeve shirts. it's like, they're selling us half as much effort for twice as much $$

i buy some stuff at the mall, sure, but i also frequent thrift stores and mix and match my own styles. it's totally funny to me how many people approach friends, co-workers, strangers even, and ask me where i got my 'outfit'. big grin then, when i tell them, it's even more amusing to watch the looks on their faces. i like to make a point of telling them the price too, like "goodwill had a sale, this black velvet jacket and matching pants were only $3.99 each" lol

makes me feel...kinda tingly inside wink

I'm not talking necessarily talking about the "latest fashion".Some of the people I notice the most are the ones who are dressed in old clothes, like those little ladies who go to the concert hall next door, wearing gowns they've had for decades. They sure stand out.

ah. gotcha. well, in mpls there are a lot of somali people and i love their clothes. the women wear head coverings that totally don't match their shirts which utterly don't match their skirts! but, they're lovely nonetheless

and the hmong! absolute disregard for color coordination. i've seen them wearing green checkered pants with red and pink flowered shirts accompanied by blue saddle shoes. it's like a cacophony of color and quite dazzling at times.

somedays, i wish i could simply toss on a burka and head out to work, veil and all. no one to see if my hair's a mess and what i'm wearing underneath. if i'm wearing anything at all.

these are all fashions i don't dare try out daily, because they'd frwon on that level of experimentation where i work. but someday. . . . HEY! if i ever attend another party at the park i'll go HMONG STYLE .

or not wink

Here in chicago where I live it is the opposite...There are so many different people here, that someone is bound to stick out, which they do. As for me alot of my friends tell me that I am such a unique person that no matter what I could not be like someone else. So I a just myself, that seem to work for me except in the men department. Oh well such is life.

You wanna stand out in a crowd? Wear Black Leather Chaps for men. Women wigs or crazy hair coloring and always ,always have some Piercings in your nose with a Chain or those Wild Ear Extenders. Wearing Garterhose with no Panties also does the trick or shorts that barely cover your Ass. My Personal Favorite? Wear a Sexy Coat with Lingerie and Garters underneath and Stiletos. Absolutely Charming!

natasha that sounds like half the kids in uptown. so many it doesn't stand out.

maybe context is the key to 'standing out' not the fashion itself.

Of course, everyone remembers these folks from the Celebration. Some say they were AMPsters making a sarcastic statement on the inanity of "fams", but I disagree. Anyone who has seen Bart's spaceage outfits knows why. smile

And then, there is the weird, stern look. Above is a picture of the Reformed dress a certain Orger has been wearing around campus. smile

but isn't it a current trend to buy things at goodwill or thrift stores when you don't need to?

Two good movies to watch Priscilla Queen Of The Desert and What's the one about the Gay Ball? Forgot the Title but it's great and you will see the Guys getting dressed the Transvestite and Gay guys for the Annual Ball. Famous Transvestite accused of murdering her Lover she stuffed him in a suitcase you know. They found his body many years later. Dumb film about Transvestites...To Woo Fong...Julie Newmar. See Patrick Swayzee in Drag with John Leguazamo. Crazy, but you'll never see Swayzee more Dressed as a Woman. It's very De Rigeur in England dressing as a Female for occassions. Quite Camp,Quite Wonderful...

I went to a thrift store today by my apartment and I found 2 pairs of kick ass shoes...not like I need anymore cause I am at upwards 50 to 60 pairs of shoes and some I only wear with one outfit, or certian times of the year...the shoe insanity has to stop.
