By Teresa Varley Steelers.com The Steelers were in need of a win and got just what they wanted when they defeated the St. Louis Rams 41-24 at the Edward Jones Dome. The victory improves their record to 10-5 and keeps them on top of the AFC North, ahead of the Cleveland Browns who play Cincinnati on Sunday. But the win didn’t come without a big price tag. Running back Willie Parker was lost on the Steelers second play of the game with a fractured fibula. Najeh Davenport stepped in for Parker and the ground game didn’t miss a beat as he carried the ball 24 times for 123 yards and a touchdown, and added two receptions for 44 yards. Ben Roethlisberger completed 16 of 20 passes for 261 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Nate Washington. “It was a big win for us; a win of course that we needed,” said head coach Mike Tomlin. “It’s good to see this team bounce back with what was a team effort. The guys answered the bell. They responded and stepped up and made plays at critical times. The guys’ roles got expanded during the course of battle, like it does at times. I thought they answered. “I am happy for them and proud of Najeh Davenport. Not that we are surprised by how he played, just good to see. He has been a big part of what we’ve done all year and he was big tonight. Ben (Roethlisberger) was great. He managed the game, took care of the ball and made big throws, but there were a bunch of people that made plays for us tonight. It was great team effort. It was good to get a win and to get a win on the road. Good response to a little bit of adversity and we move forward.” The Rams came out firing on offense to start the game with Marc Bulger hitting Isaac Bruce for a nine-yard gain. But on third-and-one Bulger fumbled the exchange from center and tried to dive for the first down, but came up short and the Rams were forced to punt. Allen Rossum fielded the punt at the Steelers 18-yard line and as he turned up-field he was hit by Derek Stanley who knocked the ball loose. An alert Anthony Madison came up with the recovery, deep in Steelers territory at the four-yard line. With their backs against the wall the offense went to work. Ben Roethlisberger dropped back and heaved it from his own end zone, hitting Santonio Holmes in stride for an 83-yard gain to the Rams 13-yard line. The Rams were able to stuff the run, but on third-and-14 Roethlisberger found Nate Washington in the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown to give the Steelers an early 7-0 lead. It didn’t take the Rams long to come right back. Stanley took the kickoff two yards deep and returned it 43 yards to give the Rams good starting position at their-own 41-yard line. Steven Jackson opened with a seven-yard carry and Bulger hit Torry Holt for a 19-yard gain to the Steelers 33-yard line. It was back to Jackson for consecutive carries to set up the Rams with second-and-five from the 18-yard line. Jackson did damage in the air attack as well, pulling in a six-yard reception. Bulger capped the drive by going back to Jackson for a 12-yard touchdown, to tie the game at 7-7. With Parker out of the lineup the Steelers looked to the passing game on their ensuing drive and the Rams were keyed in on it. Roethlisberger was sacked for a three-yard loss because of tight coverage but bounced back and hit Holmes on the next play for a 23-yard gain. But a short gain and two incomplete passes brought on punter Daniel Sepulveda. That’s when the Steelers pulled out their back of tricks. Sepulveda, lined up in punt formation, took the snap and threw it to Davenport, who broke it for a 32-yard gain to the Rams 22-yard line. With new life the Steelers cashed in with a Jeff Reed field goal to take a 10-7 lead. The Rams got great field position again when Stanley returned the kickoff 49 yards to midfield. It was then Jackson ran right through the defense for a 36-yard gain to the 14-yard line. Bulger connected with Bruce for an eight-yard touchdown, to give the Rams their first lead of the game at 14-10. Davenport became the go-to guy for the ground game and responded on the Steelers next drive. He sliced through the defense for a 14-yard gain, added a six-yard carry and then barreled through for a five-yard run for the first-down. Roethlisberger aired it out on the next play, hitting Washington for a 33-yard touchdown, his second of the game, recapturing the lead for the Steelers, 17-14. The defense came up big on the following drive, forcing the Rams to go three-and-out after they scored on their last two possessions. The offense responded by sustaining a long-drive, with Davenport as the work-horse on the ground and mixing in completions to Hines Ward and Holmes. Roethlisberger capped the 10-play, 78-yard drive that ate up almost six and a half minutes with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Davenport to extend the lead the 24-14. On the next drive the Rams benefitted from a 31-yard penalty on Ike Taylor, who was called for pass interference against Bruce. Bulger added completions to Randy McMichael and Holt, giving the Rams a first-down at the Steelers 29-yard line. James Harrison hit Jackson after a reception, knocked the ball free and came up with the recovery. But an official review overturned the call, ruling it an incompletion. The Rams capitalized on it with a 52-yard Jeff Wilkins field goal, to pull them within a touchdown at 24-17 going into the half. The Steelers took the second half kickoff and kept riding the power running game of Davenport and mixed in the pass as they marched down the field. Davenport took it himself from a yard out for the touchdown to give the Steelers a 31-17 lead. The offense juggernaut continued on the Rams next drive. Jackson had two short carries and Bulger hit McMichael for the first down. Bulger connected with Bruce for an 18-yard gain and came back to him three plays later for a 21-yard gain. Jackson was knocked for a two-yard loss and then the Rams got a break when Dane Looker recovered Jackson’s fumble. Bulger found Drew Bennett at the goal line for a 23-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 31-24. After the Rams stopped the Steelers offense, they had the chance to get right back in the game. Jackson was knocked for a one-yard loss but came back with a five-yard gain. The defense had the chance for the stop on third down, but McMichael made a huge 10-yard grab. After not being able to get to the quarterback the last two games, James Farrior and Casey Hampton got to Bulger for a nine-yard sack and putting them in a hole they couldn’t get out of. The running game took another hit on their next series when Davenport went out with an ankle injury. Carey Davis got the call and answered with three straight carries for 16 yards, including a 12-yard carry. Davenport came back into the game and looked strong with a 16-yard carry off right tackle. Davenport was stopped on the next play for no gain and a pass to Holmes was incomplete. Roethlisberger scrambled for a nine-yard gain, but came up just shy of the first down. Reed hit his second field goal of the game to give the Steelers a 34-24 lead. The Rams tried to mount a comeback and made big third down conversion on a completion to Bennett. Three consecutive incomplete passes forced the Rams to go for it on fourth-and-10. That’s when the defense came up with their biggest play of the game. Ike Taylor intercepted Bulger’s pass and returned it 51 yards for a touchdown to secure the win. | |

Seattle will be making their 5th consecutive playoff appearance. Seahawks soar past Ravens Seattle RB Shaun Alexander, the 2005 league MVP, struggled with injuries this season but put together his best game since Week 4. He rushed for 73 yards on 13 carries and was part of a rushing attack became only the third team this season to rush for 100 yards against the Ravens. Alexander even took a screen pass 14 yards for his first touchdown reception of the season and first since Week 16 in 2005. Ravens rookie QB Troy Smith fumbled on the Ravens' third possession of the second half. The ball was recovered by the Seahawks, and four plays later Josh Brown nailed a 39-yard field goal to put Seattle up 27-0 in front of a raucous crowd at rainy Qwest Field. Smith made his first career start and had a rough time. He finished 16 of 33 for 199 yards and lost two fumbles. Before Smith hit Derrick Mason with a 79-yard scoring strike in the foruth quarter to avert the shutout, the Ravens' offense had punted nine times and hadn't penetrated beyond the Seattle 35-yard line.
