It bums me out too. From time to time I'll read ex-pat forums and there will always be someone writing about the pitfalls of relationships between foreigners and Thais. I know I have a strong, 'proper' relationship with Mon, but I do sometimes recognise parallels in what they say and for some reason the topic can get me down. I don't like to frequent those sites and I don't want to be a part of it, just another foreigner with a Thai wife. I'm happiest when it's just Mon and I, two people who love each other, and I stay away from the ex-pat scene.

Here's an example of a type of this relation ship..
http://en.wikipedia.org/w...rder_bride It's not the ONLY way but where I'm from, I've seen a recent case of it and I had no idea it even existed until my mom explained to me why her friend all of a sudden was married and kissing all over a young girl who couldn't speak hardly ANY english at all. Although I know she probably had some say in it, I felt so bad for her. She looked very uncomfortable sitting around in a group of all English speaking people whom she had no idea what they were saying. I just wanted to talk to her to give her some company but I didn't know what she was saying. I feel bad for these girls although I know some choose it.

I remember when I was back in the UK working to save money to come back out here. I'd been out here a few times and Mon and I were already a pretty solid couple by then. My supervisor, a middle-aged lady, saw a picture of Mon and asked me about her. After that I had to hear about how '99% of those relationships don't work' and all this condescending crap. A few months later when I told them I was leaving the guys in my department were all like 'Nick's going out to see his Susie Wong'. They assume the Thai girl is a prostitute, is sleeping around behind her man's back, that the guy can't get a girl in his own country (which seemed true actually, for some reason ) and it's not a 'real' relationship. If I go online I can read all manner of stuff about relationships between Thais and 'farang' and despite having a rock solid and genuine relationship with Mon it still always depresses me.
