I often say it completely as a polite gesture, like saying hello. I care how people are, but not specifically when I'm asking.
But Tom also says "do you care?" as an unthinking automatic, too! He shouldn't be so quick to judge, Mr. "you're an idiot to not listen to me and get married even though I'm the biggest idiot of all since I got married four times!!" My Legacy

If it's someone I know well, I mean it every time.
If it's someone I barely know, I say it as another way of saying "Hope everything's going well for you today", and I guess I assume they know that's what I mean lol...If someone I barely know asks me that question, I always assume they mean "Hope things are going well for you" as well, so I answer with a "Fine, thanks" regardless of how Life is going at the moment. I've never run into anyone that has said to me "No, I really meant that...how ARE you doing?"

Do you really care when you ask or are you just being cordial most of the time? Cordial here.... Leykus used to be on here (he's syndicated). My personal belief is that everyone is just being cordial and that we don't care about anything unless it ultimately involves making us feel good. But that's just me. P.S. I'm a big Dex fan; he always poses provocative questions. Then again, I'm only saying this because his provocative questions and their threads make me feel good. I love Tom Lykus We have a DJ sorta like him here on the local rock show, named BJ Shea. But honestly I don't ask the question if I'm not concerned

to most folks I know, I'll ask how are you doin, and mean it....but you guys all know the ones I am talkin about, if you ask them how they are doing, they tell you absolutely everything that happened to them bad for the last week ... and it's not that I "don't care," it's usually co-workers, and the same people all of the time saying the same "stuff", so to them I only say "hi" but I do acknowledge them all the time ...
