While American women see super-thin stick models and feel unattractive and unhappy about their average or curvy bodies, men don't feel the same way. Fully 80 percent of men ages 18 to 50 say they want a voluptuous woman, according to former plus size model Nancy Hayssen, who has written a book every woman could love based on the title alone: "101 Sexy Secrets: How to Be Hot, Sexy & Beautiful at ANY Size!" Another 15 percent of men prefer a woman of average size, while just 5 percent opt for a super skinny lady.

Twenty years ago, most fashion models were a size 8. Today, that's been replaced by an emaciated size 0. Meanwhile, during those same two decades, the average American woman, who stands 5' 4", ballooned from a size 10 to a size 14. Fun fact: A 14, which is now considered a "plus size," was approximately sex bomb Marilyn Monroe's dress size.

"We're being lied to everyday. The fashion industry and Hollywood have spread the myth that men want skinny, anorexic-looking women," asserts Hayssen. "The truth is it's plus size or curvy women who are considered beautiful."

That sentiment was echoed in a recent poll of 4,000 adults conducted by British weekly magazine Grazia to find out the ultimate attractive man and woman. Men overwhelmingly said they are most attracted to women who have curves, rather than skinny women, and prefer brunettes with "long, wavy hair." And 78 percent said a woman's most attractive feature is her smile.

Men are a practical lot. Three-quarters said the hobby they find most attractive in the opposite sex is cooking.

So what do women want in a man? A stunning 93 percent are looking for someone who makes them laugh, while 73 percent want someone who will "automatically" pay for a meal. Men who own their own home are five times more attractive than a man who does not. OK, so women are practical, too.

So org men do you agree?

The numbers change is mostly because of vanity sizing. Marilyn's dress size was called a 14 back then but by today's standards that makes her dress a size 9/10. That is not comparable to a modern size 14 at all.

There is no denying that a lot of models and actresses are really, really skinny...but the whole vanity sizing thing is also way out of control.

I also believe that when men say they like "curvy" they mean they like women that are not skin and bones, that have a butt and some boobs and a certain softness to them....they do not mean "fat" by any stretch of the imagination.

Yeah, I have to agree with that. Not that I think like that, but alot of men probably would. Hourglass figure or whatever.

I always used to think men liked muscular calf muscles. I was always embarrassed to have such skinny little legs. I asked my mum, she said men don't like "nutcrackers" falloff is that true?

I was a "Janet Jackson" type when I was younger. Now, I am more like Esther Baxter without the make up, lighting, and tiny waist. But everything else we are the same! biggrin

My taste in men has not changed. I have always wanted a man bigger than me. My own personal jungle gym if you will. smile Linebacker type. Similar to me in regards to hobbies, careers, music, money ethics and experiences. I have never had any patience for anyone younger than me. I have always enjoyed older men. wink

Speaking as a skinny chick myself, I'm getting sick and tired of being demonized by average and big women. Some (*ahem!* Mo'nique) even go so far as to call us evil. Cunt.

Newsflash: No, most of us don't have eating disorders or otherwise starve ourselves. No, we're not skinny to make you bigger women feel bad about yourselves. No, you do not have the right to stare or make comments about skinny women you see. And yes, you are a fucking idiot if you actually bought that crap magazines feed you and felt bad about yourself because of it. Sounds harsh, but how in God's name could somebody fall for that? How about a women's magazine like Bitch? Or a general interest one like Mental Floss? Hell, why not even a textbook or the back of a matchbook over traditional women's titles like Cosmo, Vogue, etc.?

it gets pretty hard to "love yourself" when you try to treat yourself to a cute outfit following a trend - or sometimes not...and you can't find your size.

now..i'm not gargantuan, i'm around marilyn's size right now, and to find a good pair of jeans that doesn't always look painted on is hard.
i was once told by a clerk that i should think twice about shopping at their store, and then was quick to point me in the direction of Addition+Elle - a plus sized (to the extreme) store.
it hurts knowing you won't be able to look slim and cute in a babydoll dress, but will look pregnant because you have wide hips and a large chest.
it hurts seeing all the cute girls out there rockin the nice clothing, or even just casual everyday who gives a fuck outfit, knowing you can't even do that without looking like you're trying too hard because you had to get the skinny jean in size 13.
it fucking hurts when you don't get a second look (or even A look to begin with) because that slimmer chick caught his eye first (there are more issues where that's concerned in my book but that's another thread)
it just fucking hurts and it sucks and it cant make someone extremely bitter.

that's when it gets hard to "love yourself"

You are right Evenstar nod

I do not read magazines and I try not to consume too much tv but it is still every where. There are times that I log off and walk away from the org because I feel like because I do not have big breasts then I am not attractive.
I know deep down that is not true but there are so many things like billboards, ads in newspapers, the internet, commercials, signs in stores that depict what a beautiful attractive women should look like.
It does get to be a bit too much. I think the difference is that women compare themselves to other women, I have talked to several men that say they never look at another man and compare themselves to them.
That seems odd to me because I do it without even thinking.

I used to get really irritated at this women at work. She was not obese but she was not petite by any means but it really did not matter to me. Every day she would say things to me like "I hate skinny blonde women like you, you make me sick!". Usually she would say things like that to me as she was stuffing her face with fast food and I was snacking on something healthy. It was so funny because if I was to say to her "I hate fat women like you that eat fast food junk everyday, you make me sick". I would have been considered cruel, though I admit I would never say something like that to anyone because it is not for me to judge. It just seemed rude the comments she would make to me. Finally I told her that I really have to watch what I eat because my weight fluctuates and my dad's side of the family is really large and I do not want to end up like that. I wanted her to know that I am thin like this because of the choices I make and back then I was exercising too.
It is funny the double standards some times.

You try going store to store to store trying to find a place that actually stocks size 0 and get back to me on that. Given the upswing in the collective weight of the population, many places won't carry anything smaller than a 5 now. To top it off, I'm short to boot. (No joke, I'd make Prince look tall) So even on the rare occasion I find pants that fit, I've still got to get about a foot chopped off the legs so I can wear them. Currently, I own exactly 2 pairs of pants.

The point is, we've all got something about us that doesn't fit the so-called ideal, and we all know the pictures in magazines are pure, unadultered bullshit. So why do people keep falling for it?

I am actually very skinny and anything but tall myself. We have other sizes here in Europe, so I don't know if I'd fit in a size 0, but it could be. I guess it would depend on the actual piece of clothing shrug. Pants are too long for me as well most of the times, so I cut them off. Maybe the situation here in Europe is different as the population is less overweight than in seems to be in the US. Here most shops have tons of cool clothes for skinny people, so I am very lucky as it is not difficult at all to find something nice. Usually the smallest size they have fits me quite well, at times it's still too big, sometimes it's too small, but overall no problem at all.
