http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davenport_%28sofa%29

Davenport is the name of a series of sofas manufactured by the now-defunct A.H. Davenport Company. Due to the popularity of the furniture at the time, the name "Davenport" has become a genericized trademark and is often used as a synonym for "sofa", especially in the Midwestern United States and in Northern New York State, in the Adirondack Region and on the western flank of that region in the Tughill Plateau, in villages such as Camden, and especially amongst those born there before World War II. As it happens, the so-called Davenports of that region are often locally made sofa versions of the locally manufactured convertible Adirondack Chair. Metaphorically speaking, "Davenport" is like "Kleenex" or "Dockers".

cloud9 Bless that site.

Thanks for the scoop on the origin of the word "davenport". My late grandparents used to call a couch or sofa a "davenport". I always thought that term to be a bit odd, but never said so. lol

Another weird word that I have heard is "dungarees" instead of "blue jeans". My aunt always calls blue jeans "dungarees". Guess that must have been a genericized tradename too.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I actually have a leather sofa called a Davenport. I converts into a double bed...kinda like a futon but with full sofa arms and not as flimsy. I love it.

Davenport?!

sure. my grandparents used to call their couch a davenport. i think a lot of old people call their couches and sofas "davenports". i don't know what that's all about. i'm just trying to be inclusive.

My grandmother did too, and I personally appreciate the effort to bring it back to the public lexicon. Let it forth be known 'round the country as "davenport"!!

i grew up just accepting the fact that we had a couch in our house but our grandparents had a similar looking piece of furniture but it was a davenport. i didn't question it. i figured the grown-ups knew what they were talking about. shrug

My step-grandmother called it a 'davenport'. So when I hear the words 'davenport' I associate it with the kind of crazy wickedness in Mommy Dearest.
Not great memories. smile

I've pimped mine here before:

This one looks fabric-covered; mine's black vinyl (it doesn't come in leather 'cause it's too long to be covered without seams).

My great grandmom called it a davenport and she also had a hassock to put your feet on in front of her davenport.

I call it a couch and now I am trying to convert from comforter to duvet.
Oh and from pants to trousers.

why, because this thread isn't called "sofa, couch, davenport or pile of oily rags"?
