I've always loved the movie Shadows & Fog.

In addition to it being shot in a beautiful black & white, it asks many great questions about life and does so with humour, suspense and an all-star cast.

In one of my favourite scenes, a bunch of prostitutes share some wine around a table in their brothel, with their guest, Irmy (Mia Farrow). Among the actresses playing the ladies of the evening are Lily Tomlin (Dory), Jodie Foster and Kathy Bates. Throughout the scene, the camera slowly pans around the circular table, from the center. Here are some choice quotes from that scene:

DORY: Men and women want very different things out of sex. And they've never forgiven each other.

IRMY: Where would you say love came in?

DORY: There's only one kind of love that lasts - unrequited love. It stays with you forever!

DORY: Marriage? Let me tell you gals somethin' about marriage... You gotta work at marriage, like anything else. A good marriage takes a lotttt of work...

OTHER: When it starts feeling like work, it's over [WAVING HER HAND].

DORY: lt's all luck. We're all so dependent on luck.

IRMY: l would rather not admit that, if you don't mind. How can it all be luck?

DORY: Well, let's say this guy likes to be sat on...

[OTHERS START CACKLING]

l'm serious! ...and ridden around the room by a naked woman...who keeps digging her spurs into his side

OTHER: Yeah, Dory! Show her your spurs, Dory!

[CACKLING]

He meets maybe a hundred women and when he tells them, they faint or they laugh. Or both. ...Maybe a few good sports do it just to please him,.. But sooner or later they say,''What the hell is this?!'' [CACKLING] ''l'm riding around on a man's back!'' [CACKLING] ''This is insane!'' And my spurs are getting, you know...blunt." [LAUGHS]

And then one day he meets a woman who gets her own erotic pleasure by putting on spurs and riding men around. lt's a marriage made in heaven! Sheer bliss!

...But what are their chances?

Uh, I watched Kill Bill Vol. 2 last night. My favorite scene is when she's in the coffin, and it replays her training with the Master and all the suffering she went through during that training and on how tough he was on her. Then here she is in a situation where that training does turn out to save her life. I like to think of that when I have to do things in my life that might be considered "extremely painful training". One never knows what might be useful to them in the long run.

Good call! I always wondered if Woody intentionally cast lesbians as the prostitutes. hmmm

I really liked the part where she plucked out that bitches eye!

It doesn't make me think of anything deep...I just wish I could do that to certain people and not go to jail.

I know the feeling.

I suppose it's a blessing that I remain ignorant and lack the ability in a lot of things, cause I wouldn't be right sometimes.

It's overrated, I dare say.

the only time unrequited love is beautiful is when it is in a book or a movie. the reality of it is sad.

the statement that unrequited love stays with you forever just spoke to me.
of course it's painful and sad and wretched. i guess i think of those
loves that you never reveal. we can pine away over it's beautifully sad idealism
because we never have to face the reality of what it would have been.

I'd agree.

But, then again, I think "love" is overrated. lol

i think when you're tired of the same patterns and rhythms and disappointments of actually being in "reciprocal" relationship cycles, the idea of a purposefully unrequited love object might not sound too bad. of course, the way life goes, when you DON'T want your love reciprocated is when they come running your way and knocking the door down. lol

nod very true. And as true as it is, I always hate going through the pain of it all. I often wonder while i'm going through the pain and disappointment in a relationship where love is reciprocated what is the reason. And I sometimes ask myself why I do even stand to bare the cycle...but then i get to thinking, the bad times sometimes make you appreciate the relationship when its good. Let's you know that at the end of the day everybody isn't perfect...and that no matter how green that grass make look on the other side, it definitely isn't. Some people have to learn the hard way on that note.

They throw away something over one or two little traits that they felt they couldn't deal with thinking something is better out there (and they maybe) but usually that grass is just as dry as ever...and that what those one or two little traits that got on your nerves don't seem so bad to deal with after all.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

whether you decide to be with someone forever and commit to that wholeheartedly or decide that you're meant to be alone for the rest of your life and commit to that instead, either way you are giving something up, and either way you are giving yourself something you wouldn't have if you chose the other option. i guess it depends on how you wanna greet the water in your glass on a given day.

I was very excited to see that Bladerunner: The Final Cut had been released. Unfortunately it's not been shown at any of my local cinemas which is a crime as everyone should see it that hasn't already. I took it upon myself to enquire at every cinema locally to see if it would be showing but to no avail.

Luckily it has also been released as a 5-disc collectors DVD set which I'm drooling over and have asked for for Christmas in a round about way. I missed out on the limited edition box set before and I had to basically settle for the 1 disc version. I don't expect anyone to read this as I just bored myself writing that!

In short, I love everything about Bladerunner with the minor flaw that is Sean Young. The characters are fascinating, visually it is stunning, the storyline is exciting and Vangelis' fits the mood perfectly.

They showed the Final Cut version here a couple of weeks ago in a theater. It was one night only. I thought about going, but there was some conflict and I couldn't make it.
