Some years, yes. It has to be a really brutal out to stay frozen though cuz The Lake Huron is pretty fuckin' huge. I'll try to dig up some pictures. oohhh.. It takes a lot for the Great Lakes to freeze cause they're so big. I don't live near one, though. Superior is about a 2 hour drive for me. |

GangstaFam said: SupaFunkyOrgangrinderSexy said: Is that like extra snow or different kind of snow because of the lake? both. The way I understand it is that basically, lake-effect snow is when a snow storm passes over a lake and draws moisture from the lake, leading to the production of more snow (b/c of the extra moisture in the air) which then falls as heavy, wet snow once the storm gets over land again (usually on the east side of the lake, as weather patterns generally go from west to east). I lived in Chicago for 6 years and while we never got lake-effect snow, northwestern Indiania and southwestern Michigan were always getting bitch slapped with Lake Michigan's lake-effect snow.

There are a few competing versions of the story of how Fahrenheit came to devise his temperature scale. According to Fahrenheit himself in an article he wrote in 1724 [1] he determined three fixed points of temperature. The zero point is determined by placing the thermometer in a mixture of ice, water, and sodium chloride (or sea salt). This is a type of frigorific mixture. The mixture automatically stabilizes its temperature at 0 degrees F. He then put a alcohol or mercury thermometer into the mixture and let the liquid in the thermometer descend to its lowest point. The second point is the 32nd degree found by mixing ice and water without the salt. His third point, the 96th degree, was the level of the liquid in the thermometer when held in the mouth or under the armpit. Fahrenheit noted that, using this scale, mercury boils at around 600 degrees.

Yeah,we are spoiled here in California, aren't we? Nice weather all year round. We have the nerve to complain when we get a little rain, lol. It's funny though...I have this crazy desire to spend a Christmas in Chicago, just to see what it's like.I have relatives there,so maybe one day I'll be bold enough to try it [Edited 12/6/07 5:17am]

I always wondered how do people drive in snow.Isn't it...dangerous? On the freeways? I assume that people don't drive the regular speed.

In California, you can get through the entire year without ever needing to wear a coat or a scarf or gloves, for that matter.

But our cars are equipped with better tires and you learn how to drive in it. And yes, things slow down a whole heap. Through the worst of it earlier this week I didn't go more than 20 miles an hour on the freeway, and you leave a stopping distance of about 8 car lengths in front of you. |
