Okay becasue of RhondaB and NPP's thread about breast cancer, I went and had my first mammogram done.

HOWEVER.....my left breast needs to be redone and they wont tell me the reason. Being a Black woman whoese family has a strong history of cancer I am a little concerned.

The tech also told me I should have been coming in at age 30 not 40 like I did but I was never told this!!!

I have insurance but the wait here is 4-7 months to re-do the test. My boss said she will help me pay out of pocket if I have too to have the test done again.

My question to the ladies is.... has you test ever been abnormal and how did it turn out for you?? I think they need to re-do it to establish a baseline for me, that is what I am hoping for anyways.

Rachel,
I went through this EXACT same thing 2 months ago..my first mammo ( I am 38, white, but with a history of Breast Cancer~ my mother had it at age 50..and she is a SURVIVOR....yeah... woot! woot! woot!) But I went and had my initial exam, then the office called and told me that they wanted me to come in a redo my left breast because they saw something "abnormal" and they wanted to re check , I was scared to death ( and I shared my feelings and had these wonderful women on here saying prayers and sending well wishes..) and went I went back and had the re check everything came out fine!! Matter of fact the mass that was there, was completely gone...I saw the xrays myself...so I was totally relieved. It is NOT uncommon for a women to be called back for rechecks or do overs, it does happen alot, and plus you would much rather do one than not, I know I would. But I do understand your fear...I will send up prayers for you and be thinking about you...if you need to talk you can ALWAYS orgnote me or email me: darrenandsuzyn@bellsouth.net...
Bless You and take care.. hug

Rachel...I just re read through it all...just wanted you to know that I am praying for you, and everything that you are going through. You sound like a very strong willed and strong mineded person...you are going to be just fine. and the offer for having someone to talk to about anything at all still stands!!

Okay I just came from the dr's office. I will be having a lumpectomy On Jan. 10th. I will meet with the radiologist first for ANOTHER mammogram that will be compared with the existing one. Then I will be given local anesthesia for a needle biopsy. The radioligist and surgeon will discuss the findings with me as to where to make the incison since there are possibly 2 areas of the left breast involved now.

1.00 head to surgery for general anesthesia and she says surgery will take 60-90 minutes becasue of the size of the mass, depth and some cutting of the muscle will be involved possibly. She says I should be able to come home that night but we will see. I plan to return to work on Monday if all goes well.

Thanks for keeping us posted sister-cous. hug

I need to .orgnote you but I'm at work. sad I will ASAP hug

Try not to worry too much about this though, sometimes they just cant get a clear reading, so require the test to be repeated. I hope this is the case.

Okay kids back at work today. Sorry I haven't returned any calls BUT I had a mild set back on Sunday-Tuesday. Before my surgery I was in the middle of a root canal, well the tooth is infected an caused me to be very sick a few days. I go back to Dentist tommorrow and nack to the surgeon on Friday.

The good news is the mass WAS NOT CANCER!!!!! I still need time to heal and I am stitched up like the Bride of Frankenstein but so what!!!

I will wear my scar with honor and to educate women of all ages the importance of monthly exams and a yearly mammogram!!!!

My Mother wore her scar for nearly 30 years and she still got play!!! Will let you guys know Friday if physcial therapy is needed or not.

The actual surgery did take a full 90 minutes and I went home around 5:30 pm. The needle biospy was not bad at all once I was numb. I can do this again if I ever had to in my life now that I have experienced it!!!

Of course my hair is now shedding from the general anesthesia but I will deal with that later!!! I just am so re4ady to get back to being me at 100%!!!!!

HI,

I'm having my first mammogram on Monday. Its called First Stop because you stay for the results and not wait for 2 weeks. Apparently I might be all day but hey if you get the results thats ok by me! Not really nervous about it as I got some superb advice here on the Org and Rachel's experience has been uplifting but I should think very stressful for her.

I am so glad that Rachel has the okay and that God was looking down on you girl. hug
