Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back are genius. They hold up as two of the greatest classics in American cinema, imo. But that's it. Return of the Jedi is just a muppet movie broken up my Darth Vader saying, "Obi Wan has taught you well" over and over and over and over again.

The other three movies are mediocre cinema. They're somewhat enjoyable at times, but lacking the heart of the original two. Plus, for me, the big flaw in the newer movies--aside from Jar Jar Binks--is the absence of a Han Solo-type character.

I think they're pretty good films, much like other pretty good films. Not the best, but not bad at all. A decent way to spend a couple of hours. smile

i think if you take out the ewok crap, jedi is a pretty entertaining short film. maybe not on par with the first two, but still pretty engaging. without those damn ewoks, mind you.

It's somewhat enjoyable, sure, but even the part without the Ewoks, the beginning, drags on so long. The opening sequence is torture. It takes forever for anything to happen.

It's cool that it introduced two major cultural touchstones--Boba Fett and Princess Leia in the gold bikini--but it's really, really slow, don't you think? And when Luke says, "You serve your master well," I cringe. That bad dialogue runs throughout the whole movie. And the really boring way he beats that monster by just throwing a little rock... But mostly it's just that it takes way too long--40 minutes in, you're still waiting for action.

I think asking the question as to whether Star Wars is overrated is a bit redundant. It's fun and pure escapism and shouldn't be judged as anything more or less.

It's actually quite a complicated art piece:using Lucas's keen interest in abstract elements of patterns of sound and visuals, old and new school elements in all the details, and symbolic plot elements all disguised in a kidlike fable type story made hipster by keeping all the mannerisms and human elements natural to 1977.

At least Star Wars was art.All the others kind of dwindled down into profit hungry monsters (which is why Gary Kurtz says he quit as producer after Empire)...

Lucas originally never ever thought Star Wars would be financially successful. He was making a intentionally retro homage to serials but using completely modern use of previous abstract cinematic ideas he had explored in his sutdent films and in THX 1138.

In fact, you could suspect that since American Graffiti was his only successful movie up till 1976, he tried to insure some kind of appeal by including the Graffiti human element with the banter between the three protagonists... and remarkably... robots. No one had thought of featuring the machines themselves as vaudville like comedian entertainers. In fact they are our protagonists for the entire opening and setup of the film!

May people are unaware that in the 70's using an old school orchestral score with a title crawl at the beginning was as retro arty as the obvious shit like Grindhouse.

People also don't know what a difference in sound design Star Wars created for ALL movies today as far as sounding more convincing with sound effects that are created for the movie, not pulled out of a stock library. Let's not even go into the fact that it was one of the first wide dolby stereo releases

Peter Jackson has said he was greatly inspired to make fims because of Star Wars. So I doubt we would have had him making Lord of The Rings without Star Wars.

It would have been SO much better if Lucas had been able to use his original idea of using Wookies, but technically it wasn't feasible.

N actually I don't mind the ewoks, granted they didn't need to be as warm and fuzzy as they were, but I like the notion that even technically advanced forces can still get an ass beating by earth loving freedom fighting rebels, plus the force was in play cause everything changes when Luke DOES become a Jedi.

Exactly. A better way to spend a few hours than watching some other flicks, but not the very best way where films are concerned.

eek eek eek Wookies instead of Ewoks ? That would´ve been a great idea ! I have never heard of this original idea before...why wasn´t it technically possible ? What´s the big difference between using Ewoks and Wookies ? Shouldn´t be that much more diffcult, really.

Basically there's more ewok sized people than wookiee sized people on planet earth.
