Oi Davies! How are you addressed?

How do people address you? By your surname or just your forname? Do you think it's a bit rude for people to address you by your surname? Does it bother you? Do you go most commonly by a nickname?

No one calls me by my last name unless they think they're being cute.
For a long time random people would call me "Miss Carrie". I don't know where that came from. But it was several people I knew and none of them knew each other or that anyone else called me that. It was weird.

People usually call me Jessica, but people that are closer to me call me by one of my nicknames (there are many nuts) or my last name. It doesn't bother me to be addressed by my last name shrug

My name is thankfully short enough as it is so people usually don't feel the need to abbreviate it, and I would never come up with a nickname or pet name for myself. I've always wondered if people who do that simply dislike their real names?

I think nicknames have to be given to you by other people. Otherwise, it's kind of silly.

So is "nickname" negative by definition? Maybe I mean "pet name" then, i.e. a name that is simply different from your real one. I know lots of people that have come up with names like that for themselves. For example one guy whose name is Carl likes to be called Charlie etc.

No, I don't think nickname has negative connotations. But I still think it's silly to all of a sudden decide people should call you something else. lol
Nicknames usually come from family or friends and just kind of stick somehow.
I mean, I could decide that one day I'd prefer everyone call me Petunia and everyone would think I was crazy.

Well if you chose that particular name then yeah, I can see why they would think that. lol

Don't you know any people at all that have "re-named" themselves though? It might be simple and common versions like Don instead of Donald and Mike instead of Michael. I know people that have chosen those for themselves.

Then there are the extreme cases like when a former friend of mine changed his name from Finn to Batte. In English that might make sense since "Finn" is a nationality but in Swedish "Batte" sounds very much like "blatte" which is similar to your "N" word. confused

Actually, no. I don't know anyone who has given a nickname to themself. It ahs always come from family or firends callimg them that over the years (such as Don, Mike, Rick, etc.
I remember my friend Rick once tried to get people to call him RJ (his middle name is James, no lie) and we pretty much all thought it was silly. And it never stuck.

The only people who call me by my proper name are people I work with. Almost everyone else calls me by my nickname, which I was given as a baby.
