shelly duvall cracks me up in this movie. best to forget trying to figure out the plot, and just pay attention to her stream-of-consciousness rants, because they're hilarious. i love that in every scene in which she gets in her car, she gets her dress caught in the door. i have no idea what's going on in this movie, but i giggle through it every time i watch it. Yeah, her character made me feel really uncomfortable...great acting on her part for sure. I so wanted to make sense of it all and thought about it for hours after seeing it...but really, I'm clueless as to what really was going on.

That might be the only David Lynch film that makes sense to me.

If three women made you go "huh?" then try eight! It starts off normal but just keeps getting stranger until the end, where it's derailed almost completely. Francois Ozon never lets you down. I love Isabelle Huppert in that movie.

That might be the only David Lynch film that makes sense to me. i thought "wild at heart" was pretty straightforward. believe it or not, i have kind of a tenuous grasp on what "inland empire" is supposed to be about, though i hope i never totally figure it out, because its obtuse-ness is part of what i love so much about it. OH! and "the straight story" is pretty easy to get, too. and SUCH a sweet movie, surprisingly. [Edited 12/4/07 8:59am]

I've seen parts of Wild At Heart, but not the entire film I don't think. I have the damn thing on DVD too. That will be a movie for this weekend.

[Edited 12/4/07 8:59am] I haven't seen "The Straight Story" but I've wanted to see it ever since it came out. Just never got around to it, and now it's not available at any of the rental shops near me. "Inland Empire" I've seen 3 times, and I'm almost there in figuring it out. But like you, I hope I don't ever figure it out completely, because the mindfuck factor and the confusion is half of the appeal. The deleted scenes go a long way toward putting the puzzle together more completely though. As for "Wild At Heart" ... eh. To me, that goes hand in hand with "Cry Baby" (John Waters) as a really big disappointment from a favorite off the wall director. And they're similar in feel, to me. [Edited 12/4/07 9:22am] really? i love "wild at heart". i will admit, it DOES look dated now, but it's such a quotable movie, and i absolutely adore diane ladd in that film. and jack nance..."my dog...barks...some." and then there's good ol' crispin glover in his cameo as "jingle dell". maybe it's not his best movie, but i think it's a lot of schlocky fun. though i'll never forget the first thing my mom said as soon as we got done watching "wild at heart" for the first time: "that movie wasn't really necessary, was it?"
